Hi there, Ihave recently just bought a second hand vario top box which is fitted with a lock that is unlocked but obviously not coded to my key. Ibelieve you can change the coded lock to my key, does anyone know how this is done

Hi Julie, welcome aboard :). You should certainly be able to get your local BMW dealer to recode the lock but I'm sure if you do a search on key/lock recoding you'll get an answer from there:thumb2

Cheers
Jez

Welcome to the site Julie... re-coding is not that difficult... if you have a key for the box even easier ;)

Follow the suggestions and you'll soon have it sorted :)

Thanks to you all for your advice coding my lock on my vario top box. I went on to the website and stripped it and recoded myself, took 10 minutes. Well suited......job sorted.

Thanks again

YOU DO NOT NEED THE ORIGINAL KEY, BELEIVE ME, I HAVE JUST DONE IT WITH MY VARIO BACK BOX. Put your key into the barrel, remove the barrel and readjust the plates that are sticking out until they are flush. I had to just leave one plate out which was a number 1 plate. That should do the trick.

Hi there

I had a BMW gs1150 adventure which i loved to bits and had 46,000 miles on. I travelled all over Europe on it on several occasions, two up all the time with my husband. Then decided it was time for a change and bought a BMW r1200gs..........with high hopes! Oooooh my gooooooddddddd! what a disappointment. Where do i start...build quality is not as good, mid range torque no where near as good as 1150 and the handling and stability no where near as good as 1150 and the whole feel of the bike is no comparison to the 1150. So i dont want to go backwards so after lots of research and test rides i have just bought 09 plate triumph tiger 1050 with all the luggage and after market bits plus after market exhaust and remapping, all i can say is what a fantastic machine, so much power, feels fantastic, rides fantastic and handles fantastic....and it is BRITISH MADE!

Ps. I never used the adventure off road and will never use the triumph off road so i cant compare when comes to that. Anyone wants to differ, opinons welcome.

Regards

Sorry Julie But You do or else you have to drill out the lock barrel and replace it Or else any similar key will open any similar lock???
The original pannier lock key is required to rotate the barrel to the position where you can retract the master blade and the original key holds all the rest of the lock plates back so the barrel can be removed

Thanks guys, I somehow forgot to give the dealer the spare plastic key when I traded in the bike so I will be OK anyway, they have also offered to recode it while I wait so should get around the problem without any issues.
