Possibly tempted to trade in 1100 for 650/80, but have been hesitating about 650s ability to do 80/90mph for 7 or 8 hours.

I have done a couple of short test rides and everything seems okay, but what are they like when you do 4/5/6 hundred mile days? obviously the bike is working harder than my 1100, so i pressume this will have a knock on effect to rider stamina.

Thanks

Simon

True.
But how many days a year do you travel 400 miles plus?

4,500 miles in 16 days on twisty mainly B and C roads. 460+ miles on the longest day. There were lots of stops at RNLI stations (up to 20 per day) or we would have got much higher daily mileages.
We rode like demons (You have to see Carcker2k corner a Dakar to believe it is possible to reach those lean angle fully laden.) Every day was a joy to ride. The only problems were having to replace a worn tyre and one bulb blowing in the instruments.

Having tested a 1200GS recently, the only major benefit over a 650 is having more room for a pillion + luggage. PB

I test rode a standard 650 GS last tuesday for 160 miles, solo, two up, motorways and twisty roads.......... Boy was I glad to get back on my 1100.

The vibration through the standard seat was irritating after the first 30 mins, I found the seating position too cramped, after riding through the wind and rain for 100 miles I felt more tired than riding 500 miles in the same conditions on the 1100.

The 650 motor is far quicker than I expected it be, I think it's a great bike, but no way could I ever take the step back from owning the boxer. Maybe a 2 valve boxer is a better move to make instead of the 650?!

Every year I ride back home to Austria. Since I have got a Touratech seat and bar risers I can do London-Lake Constance (a bit more than 600 miles) in a day and feel alright the next day. In standard trim I had to do it over 2 days and needed another day to recover.

Two up fully loaded a 00gs took me and the missus up to Fort William and then to Uig (Skye) and onto the Hebrides with no problems at all.

Jon and I did the ukgser trip to Morocco in 03 on 650s me on a Dakar and Jon on a standard 650, 3000 miles in 6 days, easy cruising at 85mph BUT make sure you change the seat, after 3-4 hrs the foam compresses and you end up sitting on two metal bars. Funny though the situation now sounds in pub conversations, it was very uncomfortable on the way back and had a pain the arse for weeks after!

:D :D :D

Over did it last year on a roundabout though, cost me £200!!
Still, don't know your limits till you go over them :D

My longest day on my Dakar is 15 hours, covering 600 miles. My only problem was cold (it was mid December!)

I (used to) ride regularly to Swansea to see the (now ex) girlfriend, and you get used to covering the motorway distances. Just remember to give yourself some rest breaks to give your neck and arm muscles a breather! Other than that, no probs. 31,000 miles in 18 months and she still purrs!!

long run

Hi for long runs on my 650gs I fitted a dakar seat best mod the so far, now no numb bum and back ache stopped & more comfy than my 1100gs
Hovis :D

Ive never had any major problems with long distances.

Just got back from a trip to Holland and the bike was fine, no problems.
Ive been up to Scotland a few times and its been fine.

I think as long as you stop every few hundred miles (which you have to for fuel anyway) its fine - I think thats the same whatever bike you've got. :thumb

I got both !!

I've got an 1100gs and a 650. thinking of selling the 1100 and just keeping the 650. Really only need the 1100 if two up. i been to Spain several times, done 7000 miles in OZ and loads in the uk, all on 650. Always on my own :nenau so like the 650 best. Seat on the 1100 is a killer, gotta do something about it !!
