how many kms have you done at 4000 rpm when bought??

Well, i think i may do the same.

Begin with 3-4000 and then after some kms go to 5000 +

This seems more logical.. because we never know what might happen later..

There should be a reason for the BMW to say this

I ran my bike in for the first 600 miles at 4-4.5k as was recommended, then when I took it for its first service the service manager said thrash it for all it's worth. He then went on to relate how he, and the BMW technicians in Germany, did this and he swore by it. He was extremely knowledgeable and I had great faith in his advice, so that's what I would do.

Remember: You are not just running in the engine. Brakes, suspension and other stuff all needs to be "broken in", so maybe they make us ride slowly to do this too?
As long as your engine is warm and you don't use extremely low or high revs the motor will be okay.
From what I remember 4,000 rpm is 75 mph/ 120+kmh so it's no great pain for 600m/1,000km??........and getting to know the bike without going bat-shit helps too.

Yes, "broken in" is an english expression that doesn't have anything to do with breaking things

My opinion is - don't worry about the 4k limit too much - it's far more important to not strain the engine. For example, if going up a hill, change down and do 5k rpm rather than making the bike struggle in a higher gear.

For the first 600 miles, I was not gentle with my GS but I didn't thrash it either - I did occasionally use the entire rev range but in a smooth manner rather than "thrashing".

Now it's done 8k miles and seems to have almost stopped burning oil.

No running in period observed with mine either. Took it easy until I got out of view of the dealers then rode as normal - bit of everything really.

Didnt hold it to the stop for obvious reasons. There are lots of posts on this site regarding running in, it seems most go for the normal riding option.
