Given that it seems the underwriter is more important than the broker how can we know who the underwriter is before giving details over to a broker? Having been through the various comparison sites and speaking to brokers it seems that they all come back to a limited number of underwriters, mostly markerstudy/Zenith. Are there more?

Ageas - But it's not that simple as a lot of the "underwriters" are owned by the main ones. So think Ageas is owned by Zenith. It is a minefield with only a few main players

Highway - owned by LV=
Novitas - Appear to be owned by Aviva

In addition to the two I mentioned above Cornmarket appear use Ageas, Axa, ERS, and Zentih for underwriting motorcycle policies.

Ageas, Belgian registered parent (don't think they are linked to Zenith) was Fortis in UK
Zenith/Markerstudy
Axa - French parent
Hastings only seem to sell products from one Gibraltar based company Advantage Insurance.
MCE - only sell Sabre policies

Aviva (was Norwich Union) - I think they are out of bike insurance now.
Groupama, who used to own C Nash pulled out of the UK a while ago

Until I sold the bike I had policies with Axa & Ageas. Now, the remaining bike and my car are both with Ageas.

Seems we are very reliant on overseas investors to underwrite bike insurance (and travel insurance that covers us).

I forgot about LV & was trying to remember ERS, who were the only alternative to Norwich Union in the olden days for a "rider policy".

https://www.novitas.co.uk/about says they are an agency - providing services to brokers rather than direct to consumer. Market Zenith, Axa etc

Ah, that explains it then, my cover note says to contact Novitas if I have any complaints, alternatively I can contact Aviva. So, my particular policy must be underwritten by Aviva.

Regarding LV, they gave up with directly offering bike insurance last year (I think). They now have what appears to be a division called LV Brokers that deal direct with brokers offering motocycle policies (amongst others) via a company called Highway. :nenau

if you use Ageas you not insured.

we had house insurance with them...
storm blew tiles off roof

Ageas said the wind wasn't strong enough for a claim they said wind was recorded at 24mph
it was actually Storm Arwen that blew trees down ...
I sent them photos of downed trees damages vehicles and links to news reports of trucks on the M62
argued for months, got nothing!

Roller shutter door on garage jammed but kept on rolling twisting and broke the door.
rang them, the garage wasn't covered!!!

I said its attached to the house and forms part of it and has for over 200 years!

again nothing.

Tossers... just seeing their name on this thread has made me angry.... Thanks Casbar :D
