How many teeth front or back for greenlaning

Very timely - on my Xchallenge I ran 14 & stock 47t (down 1 on front) and found it fine for me
Some go to a 13t though

It depends where yer riding I would have thought and what yer comfie speed is over the bumpy bits
As a recent doer of off tarmac for a few mile I am contemplateing getting a 1 tooth down = 15 for the trails Also I fancy a 1 tooth up for the long motorway sections. It don't take 10 min to swap does it. I also think owt under a 14 tends to rotate the chain links further than they aught to be and may result in very quick chain ware or fail

Aye Mick

I will go up 2 on the rear if I need a bit more & stick to the stock BMW Xchallenge 15t on the xcountry
It would work on yours too
I always use BMW front sprockets as they fit the Rotax shaft better IMHO

Strangely my top speed going from a 16t to a 15t has improved as the bike can pull the ratio better and rev out

In town it's super smooth on tickover like a twin & you can trickle along in 1st with the clutch out at tickover

Much better slow speed and no less of top speed

Now running 15/47

Yes, that's what I run on Ange's Sertao.
I run a choice of 3 front sprockets on the 640 depending on what conditions but the best compromise is generally one tooth down on the front with many bikes ...... dropping 2 teeth is great fun though:beerjug:

Top answer Johnny
Swap the front 1 down should be 1/16 off the speed against original - 6%. interesting thoughts regarding top end maybe that would be related more to total power produced against weight and resistance. Anyone put a 17 sprocket on front to confirm it slows it down at top end speeds ? Might save me a few quid
JUst as a tip for Dakar Sertao and would think it works on tuther bikes. I removed the tank locking flange and with the orange insert funnel do dah drilled a 1/4 =6mm hole halfway up the spout. When filling the tank now it just shuts the pump off a bit later and a lot nearer full = Got 192 miles before the countdown gauge came on

I've got standard gearing on the rear of mine and run a 13 on the front, far more rideable on the trails especially on descents, can use the engine breaking far better without the engine stalling, as others have said if doing any great road work I put the 15 toothed back on, only a 10 minute job

I run a couple of options on my xchallenge depending upon route.

Snarly stuff. 14f 52r
Intermediate. 15f 52 or 47 rear
Easy. 15f 47r

I have tried a 13 front in the past but thought it a bit excessive, and it did seem a v small sprocket!
I also have a 16 front to fit as some do when they are doing road, but I don't really use it for road/commuting so never got round to fitting it.

Re a sertao,my mate has gone from a 16 to 14 on the front, and he's much happier on the trails.

14/47 is the best compromise.
Cheaper to replace the front sprocket that the rear.
Use the throttle control instead of hammering the clutch and it should give you miles and miles of smiles.......

I'm currently running a 19 front and a std rear on the Xmoto.
Great for big A roads and motorways.
On a private road it pulled to an indicated 135mph but felt slightly floaty on the suspension and I didn't go any further, definitely not advised !
However 75-80mph is lovely and brings good fuel economy, setting off in first whilst giving it some no longer tries to flip you off the back and is much more tractable.
