Hi,

I have just inherited a Garmin Quest after buying a new bike. The previous Garmin I owned, a 2610, could get the maps for the whole of Europe on it.

Reading the specs from the Garmin website the Quest only has a few hundred megabytes of space. Will that be enough to store western Germany, Austria, Northern Italy and slovenia on?

Also reading some of the posts they dont seem very reliable? Is that the general concenceus?

The Quest 1 is very reliable, it is the Quest 2 which has the problems.

As for storage space. A European spec Quest 1 should have 253Mb of memory whilst a US spec Quest 1 has 115Mb. I would have thought you would get the maps you want on a Euro spec Quest quite easily but it will depend on what version of map software you have on your GPS.

Thanks for the answers, I think the map software is V6 which I think is a few years old now? Yep the 2610 was a lovely unit and I got 450quid for it when I sold it three years ago. :)

Will never replace the good ol michelin map though.

Thanks

You won't get all of europe on a quest 1.
I was able to have the UK and some of northern france on mine and it was just about full.

For the Garmin units with a limited amount of memory mapping isn't generally loaded onto the device on a country by country basis, unless you choose to do so (as mentioned above you can get the whole of the UK and a little more on). For cross continent route planning you plot your route in Mapsource and then elect to select the map tiles around that route. Countries are made up of numerous map tiles. As a consequence you can get some distance before the selected number of tiles, each of which consume memory space, exceed the storage area available on your Quest (243MB of the 256MB on board is available).

Tiles for European circuit using City Select v6

Tiles for the same route above using City Nav v8

Loaded tiles for UK with City Nav v8

The limited memory in the Quest makes the approach to mapping different to other, more recent, units from Garmin. Later mapping versions use bigger map tiles which consume more memory including lots of off-route data that you don't really need. See the first two examples above. The first will fit onto the Quest, the latter will run out of memory before Rome going in an anti-clockwise direction. You can get around this by using Metroguide mapping combined with MetroWizzz to make it routable on the Quest, this has similar tile sizes to the first example above but with up to date mapping data.

I found my Quest very reliable.
