How to attach these?

Hi Folks,

I'm looking to add some daytime running lights to my r850r. Now, I've been on to tunnerick and they are a little expensive for me to justify the spend on such an old bike. I've no doubt as to their quality.

Now, I've come acrross these on ebay...

I've an idea as to where I could mount them but I'm just wondering how I would wire them up? Do they need a special ballast box or some thing or can I wire them in with the head lamp?

Any tips appreciated.

I'm no sparky ...

... but 'wiring them in with the headlight' is a recipe for an on-board fire :eek: The very least you'll need is a relay and a trigger wire from hi or low beam.

That'll keep me busy. Loads of room on a GS to house all the bits. Not much on an r so it would have to fit under the seat. I'm trying to look at it in the phone and it's just too detailed to figure out how big all the bits would be but I've a star com under the seat and there is still room on top of the fuse box... Worthy of a look.

Take note these are foglights

And as such their use is illegal except in for or falling snow when visibility is under 200? metres.
I know all sorts of idiots on this site install lights like these on their bikes, and blind oncoming motorists and motorcyclists, but you should be aware of this.
They have a very short focal length and are of no use for seeing where you are going.
The only thing they are good for is blinding oncoming road users.
Some of the said idiots will tell you they can be set to not blind other road users.
This is true if you point them vertically down, but that is the only way to do so.

Myke, You will likely find that these are shuttered and produce a flat "Dip" beam I have a pair in the garage the same as these and they do, They are very useful in providing a pool of light in front of the bike Especially if you live like I do down a country lane with no streetlighting
That 30 foot pool of light that "infills" just gives you the chance to see a pothole or an animal at the side of the road that may not be sufficiently illuminated by your normal bike headlamp

As I said I have a pair of those in the garage I agree too many people fit stupid lights that blind other road users All of my bikes have used shuttered type lamps

Owen I mounted a pair of BRL 048 Ring foglamps on Maxine's mescherschmitt on the crashbars on a little tab of metal welded to the front Pic Link here for you

I used the Sidelamp circuit via a waterproof make and break switch to activate the relay and power the lights You can pick up the sidelamp positive in the headlamp or any grey wire with a black tracer

By fitting a switch as well as powering up through the sidelamp circuit allows multiple operations

you can ride with sidelight plus or minus lower lights

Sidelamp, headlamp and again plus or minus lower lights

or as per normal with lower lights off
 
Myke, I've had these lights on a 1150gsa before and they were no more blinding than the dipped headlamp. Brighter yes but not blinding. I hear what your saying and to a large extent, I agree. Nothing worse than blinding and annoying other road users but saying that, I need a little more road presence due to a number of SMIDSY moments recently and the extra bit of illumination in front of me would be useful for avoiding potholes - There are some very big ones here in Dublin and by god if you hit one you know about it...

Doc, I don't have crash bars on it and don't plan on getting any. I've been looking round for a set of light brackets that would fix onto the forks a bit like below. Trouble is, I havn't found them yet...If I can locate something cheap useable, I'll be ready to get on with it.

Also, I had a look earlier and there is room for a relay and a little wiring round the main electical connector junction area under the tank.

Go on Ebay and you will find those lights supplied with the under beak bracket, wiring harrness, switch etc plus a useful wiring diagram

When I bought mine they were £99 buy now for the complete kit or via auction.
Cost me £69 on auction:D

As others have said, not glaringly bright but make riding down dark lanes much easier.

To be classed as a foglight and be covered by the above restrictions, they will need to be E marked. As these lamps are not marked, they will be classed as an 'other' light under construction & use regs. No restriction as to fitting or usage other than no being fitted so as to dazzle on-coming traffic.

Hi, I purchased a set of Ring ice blue, driving lamps 55w halogen from Halfords pre wired, ( well not really) £39.99. today. these have a blue tint lens but shine white when on as I had them on my 1150adv.

I to noticed those lights, you show, on Ebay, and this company online shop is not far from me, there pre wired loom with switch, looks a doddle to fit.

If you have instructions on where to connect the Live + wire to, I would be grateful. :bow As I to have a GS 1200 on a 05 plate, as you, that I just got and like all boys and there toys online shopping. :bounce1 has to be done.
