How to check gearbox oil

As a newbie here can someone tell me how to check the gearbox oil?

I regularly check the engine oil level but not sure how to do this with the gearbox oil. I know where the gearbox oil filler plug is but how do I read the level.

you dont generally need to check the level, it should be up to the level off the filler plug
