Been musing for a while now about starting a website of my own just for general observations and the like.

Looked on google for how to get a web address but inundated by 20 million different sites all claiming to be the best :blast

Has anyone got a site to recommend for buying a web address and/or a site to use for setting up a webpage for a computer numpty?

Thanks :thumb2

www.123-Reg.co.uk are pretty good mate. but as you say there are millions out there!

registration is the start then you need to build the site

123reg are fine
wix.com is a simple no code site building tool

Is it a s simple as buying a web address?
Does the site need to be 'hosted' anywhere?

Do a search here on this very forum for Fast2Host......run by one of our very own (Steve Currell) you get a tosser discount, and it's an English based company, with superb backup and technical support.

I know a good dozen people here who use them, and it's the first place I go to when starting up a new site for someone.

They have a one-click install facility for most popular software to do WYSIWYG web design, including the one you're likely to use, WordPress, probably the best and certainly one of the most supported Blog type bits of software, also FREE :thumb2

I agree with Fanum in that you're better off going with somebody who offers an all-round solution rather than running round the houses for domain name, hosting, email etc.

Before you jump in, have you thought about a blog? It doesn't have to look like a blog, and you can update it easily without any software or knowledge at all. Have a google for "blogger" and "Wordpress". Both have free offerings.

I use Domainmonster for all my domains. They're pretty cheap, have a VERY good DNS Control Panel and are a pleasure to deal with if you need to ring them.

I've just started using SquareSpace for websites. It's really easy to use, and you can change fonts and edit more things (padding, borders, etc) than some of the other non-code site builders. But, if you want to get your hands dirty, you can use HTML, CSS and jQuery overrides to do stuff.

Their code is also quite clean, and the costs aren't too bad; about $10 a month I believe?

If you want a cheaper option, use Wordpress. You can either use Wordpress.com (but you can't get at the code then) or go with a hosting provider who supports Wordpress (there's usually an installer in the Control Panel) which shouldn't cost more than £20 a year. Then, go to somewhere like Themeforest and buy a template for $45, job done.
