We'd been riding along some pistes to the east of Zagora and my riding companion, Iron Butt Hall-of-Fame veteran Steve Attwood, spotted a handwritten bit of card advertising a tea stop. We were in the middle of nowhere, but this old guy quickly had his stove going and brushed the sand off some cups with a rag that I'm not sure I would have cleaned my bike with.
Two unconnected ladies wanted to try to convert their coin collection to dirhams. The coins must have been given by travellers over the years and included French centimes, Swiss franc, euro coins and... a British 10p coin. Steve decided he would buy the 10p coin from them, something that was worth about 1.2 dirham. But the moment he focussed in on the 10p the women became suspicious. Had he spotted a coin of real value? Were they about to lose a coin that in reality was worth a fortune?
To cut to the chase, in this video Steve is trying to do an all-in-one deal of paying 4dirhams for the two cups of tea plus 2 dirhams for the 10p. But the guy wants nothing to do with the exchange transaction and wants the women to handle that part of the deal. I have quite good Darija, plus some basic French, but Steve just ploughs on in English...
