Last night I parked my 1150GS on its sidestand in Islington. The BMW system topbox was attached and locked. Went off for three hours and returned to find the top box still locked but on the pavement (thats a sidewalk for our American cousins) by the back wheel.
No damage to bike or top box. It had not fallen over either.
Unlocked box and had to open the fixing mechanism to refit it to the rack. 60 mile blast back to the South coast much of it at high speed. It was a s if it never happened.
How can someone remove a locked top box from a bike?
Why would they do it?
Why when they have done it would they just leave it by the wheel?
:cockeye :spin

A possible explination is the box may have had a knock from behind but not enough to push the bike off its stand.
I had an exprience where my 1150gs with bmw system topbox fitted started to fall over I was near the back of the bike and grabbed the box to try and stop it this was a similar effect to pushing the box up and forward at the same time, at this point I found out that the plastic mounting rack will bend up and allow the box to disengage from it. the rack broke where the two mountings are near the centre but it still locks the box on ok and is servicable
maybe that could be an explination or it could just be a visit from the wee men! :D

Aaargh the wee men are coming :wave

I can get my top box with ease without unlocking it. It's an adventure aluminium one though. It's not going back on the bike either. Fell off at 30mph, luckily empty.
