Just as a little example of how fast values of technical wizardry can plummet, apparently the HP Touchpad was selling for £89 today, down from £400 odd, on the basis that HP declared recently that they intended to leave the hardware side of things in favour of software. This comes since they recruited a new head honcho who has a software background, and seems none too keen on actual stuff.

No wonder shares in the company they are buying, Autonomy, went stellar, 75% up in seconds, but HP's own shares are doing poorly. If I were a major shareholder in HP, I'd be suggesting the new man might be slightly wrong. Hardware profits might be poor, but taking the business in a whole new direction seems marginally speculative too.

The problem facing HP is one of manufacturing costs, IBM did the same thing - they offloaded all the PC hardware to Lenovo, HP are an American based company which are finding it difficult to compete with the Chinese, also profit margins are so tight in consumer/low end stuff....

HP PC - decent spec, 3yr onsite, trade costs about £400 + vat

I've just renewed maintenance on a small blade server with HP for £5900 +vat for one year.

They will probably sell the PC side to Lenovo or another Chinese manufacturer, for the life of me I can't work out why they annouced stopping before finding a buyer, I've already had customers requesting a different manufacturer.

Bunch of tits
