Anyone using these on a regular basis?

Jeremy

Yes.

They can't really cope with the HPs power on the road or off it. But I think I'll struggle to find a better compromise.

Just been quoted £186 to have them supplied, fitted, balanced etc at my home. Anyone near Kingston or thereabouts do anybetter?

Last time they were put on my HP2, it was £140 fitted and balanced, but you would have to bring your bike to my place so that it could be done. :)

For some reason the tools and balance kit are in my garage.

I have to fit a new rear tire to my HP I have the other wheels for road, but I'm not sure what to fit. The tire will have too last 1000ks

I found Karoos to be better off road on the 1200GS than TKCs, but worse on road. This was the standard Karoo, not the "Karoo T" as fitted to the HP2 by BMW.

I'm guessing the standard Karoo (which has much smaller tread blocks) can't cope with the power as well.

Another one to try would be the Metzeler Unicross, how these would cope with the power I'm not sure but the tread pattern is much more agressive than either Karoos or TKCs, and they come in a 17" size for the rear. I'm using a Unicross front on my KTM and it's way better than the others on soft terrain. Skittish on tarmac though - not a dual purpose tyre.

Karlz speaks highly of the Unicross on the dirt but equally says its a nightmare on the road. I need a dual purpose assuming I use the HP2 to tour Ireland and Scotland and for green laning. Think the TKC has more durability.

karoo

the karoos that come with the beast are good gear and give u plenty of k's (for a karoo that is) I have a desert on the back and i feel that the hp2 is a little kinda on the tyres as its lighter than my old GS 1150. I have an A10 michelin on the front which is a fully knobby and its crap on the road ,so i think (in my humble opinion) desert rear and karoo front is probably a good mix.

Ran the TK for 1600 miles in Baja about 400-500 off road
The rear was shot when I got home only got 600 miles from my original Karroo with a similar split dirt to pavement road
reasonable grip
I m considering the Dunlop 908RRs and Michelin desert has anyone tried this on the HP2?

I'm using a 908RR rear on my KTM, pleased with it so far. After about 600 miles (including several trail rides and the Hafren Rally) it's not worn much. But I'm taking it easy on tarmac as the front tyre is a very knobbly Unicross.

(Afterthought - but does the 908RR come in 17" size? I can't remember)

no it does not

Tyre Choice

Hi Guys,

I use Desert's front and rear, the 17" rear limits the choice considerably but these were unanimously recomended by the BMW Off Road school here in the UK.

Have no complaints about the Deserts, tough as old boots, you just have to be careful on wet tarmac (as with any proper off-road tyre).

The deserts are fantastic in the desert - no suprise there!

Cheers, Rick.

When you say that the Deserts or Unicross are skittish on road, how seriously bad are they? I have to ride 30-60miles to green lane or reach Salisbury Plain and then the same back home. Are they up to these distances?

I've been riding the HP2 on the Karoos over the past week on a 22mile round trip into Ldn and they have been rock solid.

Definitely. I've done 100 mile tarmac trips on my bike with the Unicross front on. You just have to remember what tyres you have fitted and ride appropriately.

Don't worry - they should be fine as long as you don't think you are riding a supermoto!

I have done about 1500 miles on my current Deserts including couple of races and a trip to Morocco with loads of tarmac use as well as thrashing across the rocky trails and desert.

Cheers, Rick.

that's great feedback and just what I needed, looks like its Deserts for me

cheapest place to buy them?

Deserts

J,

I get the deserts from my local off-road guru, Dave Clarke ( Husaberg Importer - http://www.daveclarkeracing.com/ ) and I have got a fair few off him recently.

I remember last time i bought he was quite a bit cheaper than the other places. Ring round a few then give him a call.

Cheers, Rick.
