Went to check the oil level on the HP2s today, propped the bike upright against the wall "can't have used that much oil" - panic - so "then" I read the handbook!.

Instructions (which you guys no doubt all know) are to " make sure the ground is level and place the motorcycle on its stand". So it only has a side stand, and all my previous 12's have had the oil level checked with the bike upright.

So advice please from you long term owners; do you check/top up your oil with the bike on the side stand? (oh me with so little faith)

oil

hi phoenix
to check your oil, engine hot ,leave for ten minutes ,level the bike ,sight window ,oil should be almost to top red circle ,as long as there is a little air bubble at top ,no worries... to read cold is a false reading ,as it swells with the heat . even if it looks low still enough oil in there ,still 3ltrs + at the lower level .:)

What the handbook sais is a bit misleading........that is standard blurb in all the books (for bikes with centre stands). As PBS sais, put the bike upright. You can't possibly read the level correctly on its side stand :) :Motomartin

Thanks guys, so its carry on checking/topping up as I have with my previous 1200's (looks like it gonna use oil like the others, better get a stock in £££!).

Mine's better than my R1200S - I have used a litre in 6,000 miles. I ran it in hard though. (IMO) a better way of running in....:Motomartin

:agree
Mines only used 1/2 ltr in 3500 miles so far. I also run my bikes in quite hard after the first 50miles. Well i just ride it as normal i spose.:thumb and usually end up with fast reliable engine.:JB

BTW phoenix, i think i saw you on your HP2 again at Fowlers on Wednesday morning. i was looking down from the Cafe:thumb2
