Removed this today to fit a Mudsling. Should I put the damage down to too little preload or not removing the shock guard?

If this is an Ilimberger hugger, then no it is not normal from my experience of two such huggers on two different r1200gs bikes. I did however remove the shock guard each time. The wear damage is very similar to the cutout provided on huggers for bikes with esa. Is your bike an ESA model with a non ESA hugger fitted?

Its an Ilimberger supplied to the previous (and lighter) owner of the non ESA GSA . Looking at it again it fits the shape of the guard quite well...

Thanks for the reply Simon.

I've got one like that, too!
Noise of it hitting the ESA nearly drove me mad. Fitted by a P.O.
Look for the Machine Art jobbie, appear regulary on eBay and the for sale section here. Much neater.
