Has anyone used Hyperpro shocks? I`m replacing the knackered standard ones and I`ve been told these are as good as, if not better, that Wilbers/Ohlins etc.

I`m also considering Fournales oil/air units so any advice would be greatfully received!!

i spoke to a couple of people at founales & very nearly bought a pair due to their unique air system for virtually infinite spring rate adjustment.

bottled out & bought wilbers which i very rarely need to touch, just a bit extra preload for passenger/luggage.

bear in mind that to adjust the air spring on a GS spec fournales requires a special pump @ about £200 IIRC.

I had Hyperpro shocks and fork springs on a CBR600 Honda some years ago, fitted them myself according to the instructions from Hyperpro, when i took the bike of the stands and sat on it in the garage, i'd wondered what i'd done wrong, it hardly moved. But when i rode it,......unbelievable! Don't know how they compare with wilbers/ohlins, but in my opinion, upgrading suspension is the best performance modification you can make.

Vern has got some Fournales on the donkey and he really rates them. I`m just a bit concerned about them because I¬m sure they are superb but I`m not sure what would happen if a seal went in Chile! As I`m prepping the bike for an Alaska / South America run, its a real concern.

The Hyperpro are close to Wilbers apparently and decently priced.

I replaced the original BMW shocks on my R1100S at 60k with a used set of Hyperpro shocks that I acquired on e-bay. Previous owner had done 10k on them before selling his bike and I have added another 4k since fitting to my bike.

The Hyperpro shocks were fitted by my local dealer in about an hour and transformed the handling and ride of the bike. Bike is now quite firmly sprung and you do feel that the shocks are working well under you when pressing on.

Hyperpro quality is good although the paint on the rear spring has flaked in places. For the money I paid, well worth changing to better quality shocks.

I have also heard good things about Wilbers fitted to BMW. I believe they offer a 5 year warranty so the company clearly has some faith in its product.

Any shock or major component failure whilst on tour in the middle of nowhere would be a problem irrespective of whether you buy Wilbers, Ohlins, Fournales, etc. I once waited nearly a week in mid France for BMW to source and send a replacement shock for my bike. In the end it had to come from Munich to the BMW dealer as apparently BMW France had none in stock despite the bike being a current model. In South America, chances are you would need to get a replacement shock or parts DHL shipped from the UK or the manufacturer. May be worth checking what support each supplier would offer in the event of a failure and setting up an account with Motorworks.

Hi Sarge,

I fitted a pair of Hyperpro's to my 1150 about 3yrs ago & had them on when I filmed around the IOM. They are excellent & give supreme confidence at extremes. Best of all, I paid 200 euro's for the pair...:augie

Shocks

Sarge, have just dont the mentioned trip from Alaska to south America and used std. shocks on my 115' 70.000 miles on the clock no probs. A new 1200 on the trip got through three rear shocks, BMW std shocks.
Stick with what youve got these muist be proven if you've had the bike for any length of time.

I saw a vidio on Youtube a few weeks ago, a USA rider running through his mods to a 1200GS.
Reckons he has tried a lot of shocks and has White power on his bike.
Do a search for R1200GS it' very informative.

Dave.... the rear shock on the 1100 is completely knackered so I do need to change it. Probably just do the spring on the fron to save a bit of the hard earned!! Did you do the Ride?

Paul, got the video of you on the island:bow!! Unbelievable and if the Hyperpro kept you upright at that stupid speed they will be good enough for me!! I like the bit where the power ranger gives up and waves you past. Wonder how he explained that to his mates:thumb

Shocks

Sarge, yes I did the ride which included quite a few long dirt roads, with much loose gravel and large potholes and rocks. Roads in mexico and Nicuagra are notorious for BIG potholes if your not careful you see one comming up miss this and hit the next one!. Also whatch out for stray/ wild
dogs they chase you down the road and run out in front, my 1150 is now held together with gaffer tape and cable tie big re build comming up when it
gets back!.
