Just bought a '99 GS last week (5800 miles for £5800 with engine bars and handguards but no ABS [can't have everything I suppose]) and was due to pick it up today and lo and behold my insurance company won't touch me with a barge pole for the GS.

I'm riding a 600 Hornet at the minute and the GS is only 1 point further up, not exactly a FireBlade/R1 I'm asking for. So I'm going to have to wait for the policy to run its course (2 months thank God) till I get on my new bike.

It's like it's in quarantine. I'll have to go and visit it and stroke it when I can.

have you tried BMW insurance? Go to any dealer or look on the web. I found them v helpful

Had the same problem myself, in the end the insurance company wanted £300 on top of the £170 which I had just paid at renewal to insure the GS, so cancelled the policy as it was only 6 weeks old, went with BMW for £164 fully comp, this year I'm with Carole Nash for £170 and that includes breakdown cover for UK and EU.

I was not to impressed with Motorcycle Direct as I had been with them five years and never had a claim in 26 years of riding.

Got a refund from the first policy £13

Can recommend BM insurance and Carole Nash.

I wish my insurance was £170. My Hornet is £640 TPFT with Carol Nash. But it is my 1st bike, just passed my test last year, I live in London, use it to commute and regularly take a pillion so there's not much on my side I guess.

For a new policy (if I chose to cancel my existing one) they quoted me £800 - £1000.

Guess I'm just going to have to wait till September and then try as many companies as possible (will try BMW) once I've got some no claims to get the price down.

The shop isn't even that close to me so I can't pop in to see it. So until September I'm GS-less.

Dunk, I too have had insurance problems having had 2 accidents and a theft, joys of London living. Found after much searching that no one could better BMW insurance. Bite the bullett and get out and ride it'll be worth it.

Dunno if it helps, but I had a policy with Norwich Union through Mitchell and Partners (http://www.mitch.co.uk) for my old Honda CB500 at about £320 fully comp. Adding the GS put another £100 on that for the year. I renewed at the same price as I still have both bikes. If you are keeping the Hornet they might be worth a look.

Certainly worth poking the website for a quote.

How old are you:confused:

Try Mitchell & Partners as well: www.mitch.co.uk or 0845-230-4410

I'm also with Mitchell & Partners. I pay £320 ish for the GS and an extra £30 for my DR250 (fully comp.) That's with 10 years ncb & 10% discount for passing the IAM test. I pay more because I'm in an "NE" post code.
I've been with them several years, their service is excellent, e.g. I bought the GS at 4.30 p.m., phoned Mitchell and received a cover note for the road tax at 9 a.m. the next morning :)

Steve: I'm 32, I wouldn't like to think how much it would be if I was under 25.

Dunk - give BMW Insurance a ring now - not in September - they were significantly (like 40% less) cheaper then any other quote I got when I first bought the Adv...

Mike:)

Renewal

Just had my BMW renewal through £259 fully comp with max NCB.

When I declared my details exactly the same as last year it went up to a provisional £309.

It appears that the girl working for them last year had made enough mistakes to warrant her dismissal.

It appears that she had incorrectly informed me about declaring my wifes accident in my car and had failed to pass on my accident in my car to the insurance company causing last years premium to increase after I had taken out the policy.

I refused to pay last years hike and it was subsequently waived.

When I asked them to check their telephone records regarding the original call they declined to do so.

The moral of the tale is that you must check the detail at each renewal and never take them at their word.

However BMW insurance are very competative

Cheers everyone, one of my friends last night also said that I should check out BMW's own insurance so I guess that's the way to go.
