I know I want one, but which one???

Evening all. :)

Would love a bit of advice as to what to plump for when it comes to GSs so I'm pretty sure this is the right place!

I'm replacing my ageing 900 monster commuter and am pretty much set on a GS. My budget can be from £2k-£5k but I'm most interested in the following:

1) must have a seat height suitable for a 6'1" bloke (some of the photos of the 1100s make the seat look low?)
2) a big tank, I cover 55 miles a day and would love to fill up once a week
3) be reliable (I've read of some gearbox grumbles?)

Can't make my mind up whether to spend the extra on an adv just for the tank size or get an 1100 and stick a big tank on it  Or whether to splash out even more on a 1200 on the grounds that it'll depreciate slower than an 1150 and live with filling it every three days???

Help!

Well, welcome to the world of GS ownership! Nearly, anyway.

The price bracket you've described would buy anything from the rattiest old airhead, a grotty to a minter 1100 through to a decent Adv 1150. All quite different...

What you like is personal opinion, but I've had two 1100s, one 1150 and two 100s. Not tried a 12 as yet...

They're all great bikes and the best thing you could do is go and ride them to see what you think. :thumb2

Personally, I love the grunt and build quality of the 1100, miss the sixth gear of the 1150 (but not its shite lights and flaky forkbrace), and wouldn't go for an 1200, just because it's new and I like old stuff :D

Hi alibee, I've had my 1100 for eight years, and wouldn't swap it for owt. Suggest you bite this guy's hand off:

and with what you save, get a tourotech tank and fill up every fortnight...

Dave.

Ah, just realised, you'll probably have to subscribe before you can read that link. Well worth it though, there's loads for sale on here...

Have a look at mine!

Hi there
You would be very welcome to come and have a look at my 1100GS and see what you think. Suggest you then check out the 1150 and compare and contrast.

Mine is up for grabs at the moment, there are some pictures on my flickr page if you go to:

Am looking for offers in region of £2450

Good luck in your researching....

Thanks for the replies guys, I'm leaning towards an 1100 at the moment as:

a) it appears to do much of what the 1150 will do
b) it has the same tank size (other than the adv)
c) I'll save at least £1.5k
d) I have no real plans to take it on long journeys so 6th gear won't be missed

Now I just have to find a minter! Lol, I'd love to pop around on the weekend and take a look at your bike but I can't send you a PM. Drop me an email to 'ali at bisson dot com' with your contact details and I'll get in touch.

Cheers,

Ali

Thanks guys, t'was dropped off late last night and already has 120 extra miles on her. Lovely creamy midrange and the handling is epic for something that big (much more confidence inspiring than my old Africa Twin). Not sure about the drivetrain shunt but sure I'll get used to it in the long term, now just have to find a few embellishments such as a taller screen and an 1150 headlight/beak combo.....

.....and most of the touratech catalogue! No.... must resist.....
