......can anyone recommend me a scooter?:ymca

Before you add me to yer ignore list in disgust, here's the "excuse".

The 12GS has now gone, under severe protest, and I now consider myself officially under SWMBO's thumb, for the time being at least. Until the end of last year, my commute was 120 mile round trip, mostly M25 so the GS was purrfect for the journey. Late last year, I had a major near miss thanks to some cage driver dropping his fag or phone and basically used up quite a few of my lives by just managing to avoid going under a truck.

Anyway, I now work in the West End of London, a 30 minute train and 35 minute tube journey from home (+ walking either end). I used to work in this office many years ago and this commute is the reason I now have a bike licence - I couldn't stand the heat and tourists in the summer. And I won't want to stand it this summer either.

Now, the only reason I'll be "allowed" on two wheels again is if the two-wheeled device itself looks decidedly unexciting and if I promise not even to think about enjoying myslef when I ride.

So I got thinking about superscoots like the T-Max and Silverwing. :augie:D They might just get past the fun police.

My total journey is about miles, 5 miles unrestricted dual carriageway, 10 miles 40-50mph dual with loadsa lights, so getting away quickly is crucial, and the rest East End, City and West End street-fighting.

I'm 6'2" 15 stone and need to carry a laptop case and want to store the (large) helmet under the seat.

Any views (OK, constructive or otherwise) on some options here?

Thanks in advance.....

G

Thought about an 1150GS?:D

Oooh yes, my friend, I have indeed. I'm not sure it'll pass the "I'm not going to enjoy myself, honest" test. If I were to go for an 1150, I might as well continue full circle back to the 1200 and take whatever gets thrown at me, which leads me to.........

I'd be more inclined to change your partner :aidan

This particular package comes with a large mortgage and kids, and I don't think we're "willing to separate" them all. :D

get the Gilera 185cc (VX Runner - 4 stroke), I used to have one living in London for a 40 mile round trip, fab power and regularly beat the sports bikes on the way home.... :green gri

How about one of these...This ones on Ebay :D

You might want to consider one of these:

Its a 300cc Honda SH300i. 100mph with reasonable sized wheels, without the crappy filtering ability of some of the maxi scooters i.e. silverwing, t-max, etc.

Get a T-Max for the most fun, or a Burger 650. I have owned both when my leg was duff and i could not change gear, the big burger took me all over Euroland with my mates, and i was only a few mins behind them after lots of motorway miles. Mind they are NOT good on fuel if you cane them. The burger has about 56lts of space under the seat so will swallow a laptop.

One of the senior observers at the Glasgow North IAM has had a couple of T-Max's and really knows how to use them.

They are respectably quick and have no right to corner as well as they do.

But do you need so much bulk for that trip? Maybe a 250 would be easier to filter and still have plenty of go for the traffic light drag racing.

It's 200c now. Quite a nice machine and a respectable turn of speed, without the weight penalty that you get with some of the 250cc + scooters on the market. My wife looked at one but ended up taking her restricted access test on a CG125 and bought a Honda CBF250, which is ideal for her. But it is quite small for a 15 stone chap. How about something like a CBF500 Honda? That would certainly do the job quite nicely.

The problem with the C1's is the space in the cockpit is restricted for taller chaps. They also lack the ability to manoeuvre that the more conventional scooters and bikes have. Servicing is not cheap either, given that all they are is a scooter.

Gilira Fuoco. Unfalloffable :thumb2

Err! why did you go and tell her that. :nenau All you've gone and done is feed the bikes are dangerous myth.
If your lucky she might be happy for you to ride a moped, but I fear you'll not be riding a bike till the Kidd's are grown or she's exited stage left.

I won't tell her when I have a close one. then there'll be no need for her to worry.
I'm sure she'll not be telling me about the near misses she has on her bike. Then I'll not be needing to worry either.

Good luck.

Go for the T Max !! I've had 3 of them and they are excellent Tools! Use mine all year round twist and go to 100mph and corner really well. Good in crap weather and reasonable underseat storage. Some great deals on the old model. the new one looks a bit fragile and I guess no discounts .great fun:thumb2

This might help>>

After a couple of months of friends, neighbours and family taking the piss, SHE will be the one to say FFS get a proper bike:thumb2:thumb2

PS. If you have to get one, I did over 800 miles down to Italy and back on one of these, ran like a dream 80 mpg and not slow off the mark...

that one is cheap, and if you ever get a bike back would make a nice winter commuter..save all the nasty salt eating yer Beemer :thumb2

Silverwing - Worth a look

I've got a Silverwing which I bought new last year after having ridden one a couple of times at our club's Portsmouth Honda open days.

Like the T-Max and Bergman I suspect, it's a cracking tool. Yes 600cc is probably a bit more than you need on your commute but when did that little fact ever get in the way of a bike-buying decision :augie

I really enjoy mine - Good weather protection, plenty of accelaration away from the lights and surprisingly good fun in the twisty stuff. plus it's one of those bikes that people rarely expect much of - So when you crank it over a bit they always seem surprised... :)

Give them a try. The biggest obstacle is getting over your preconceived ideas about them (Or it was with me anyway) :thumb

Nah, none of them. I started out on a Yamaha Majesty YP125R - it was marvellous.:ymca

Thanks one and all for the comments and opinions, shortlist being drawn up.:thumb2
