I was immensely content with my present 1150 GS and had not encountered the reliability problems mentioned elsewhere (one ABS sensor gone in 30,000 miles). Just moved house which is a mile down a very rough farm track and have found it just too heavy for comfort. I know I'm a wimp but the big six o looms and I seem to have lost my strength. Was offered a 'good' price on a new Dakar at a leading Southern dealer. Very tempted. Just happened to mention I had heard (from here) there was a problem with the SHBs. The salesman said there was no real problem and the new ones were 'fine'. He asked the Service Manager who said all new 650 GSs (including Dakars) had to have their SHBs replaced every 6,000 miles which will done under warranty until that runs out and thereafter it's an extra £150 added to each service.
I admire his honesty but I have to say I'm somewhat surprised and disappointed. Is it right? I know a number of you have encountered this problem but how many have NOT had a recurring problem with their SHBs? Is there a solution? I have to say I'm rather put off and am thinking of a Yamaha XTR instead (but I do like the look of the Dakar). Should I take a chance? Anybody tried the XTR?
