Putting my knobblies on, I removed the front wheel 1st, then took the back wheel off.

The loss of weight from removing the rear wheel made the bike tip forward, which caused the petrol in the tank to rush to the front. The next thing the center stand folded up and the bike was sitting squat on the floor! Arse.

It took a 3-ton trolley jack and 3 of us to get it back onto the center stand again :p

i'm trying not to laugh.

it's not working. sorry.

can i just ask, did you think it would balance somehow?

at least it looks like not much damage was done :)

I know some people think the GS is a well balanced machine, but surly no one would expect it to stand on the centre stand alone! (WOW that would be clever if it could)

The last time I took both wheels out of a bike at the same time, I had the front & the back of the bike tied to the garage roof with fairly thick rope.
As the bikes balance changed one of the ropes snapped & the bike dropped to the floor. The extra weight on the remaining rope bent the roof crossmember leaving me with my bike sitting on the floor a bit like yours, and a damaged roof. (we all make mistakes)
Luckily for me it was only a MZ300.

Ps I hope nothing’s broke other than your pride.

i thought that was funny too. fun only slightly spoiled by finding out it was an MZ at the end.

one of my own personal disasters:

working on dodgy starter on a vauxhaul magnum in a small lockup in the rain. front end in the garage to keep dry.

take the starter motor out & wedge it in next to the cam cover. vault over the wing to get to the cab as no room to squeeze past.

i turned the key to see the starter jump up & disappear into the engine bay, still connected.
live on starter sliced through a petrol pipe & set spurting fuel on fire, so climb back over the wing through the flames to get the motor out.

all a bit frantic as my bikes were in the garage with car blocking exit.

luckily i got the fire out & bike/garage/me was saved, and with a bit of splicing to the fuel pipe & 20 or so wires in the loom the car ran later that day.

i don't do that with starters any more!

BTDT got the T-shirt!!!! Got mine back up by putting two trolley jacks under each side of the H&B engine bars and slowly jacking it back up. Damage limited to a scuff on the engine bash plate.

Shit appens!

And they let someone with this much sense ride a powerful, fast machine?
I hope to god your never coming the other way to me round a corner!!!!;)

I don't believe it (best Meldrew voice). Same happened to me a few weeks back.

I usually tie up the handlebars to my garage roof, remove front wheel, front tips slightly and raises back wheel which can then be removed after tying the grabrail to the roof. did it the wrong way round and forgot to tie the handlebars so as the front wheel came out, the bike slid forwards and off the stand. I managed to lift it without anyone helping though. I got angry & turned green and........alright, so I borrowed an engine crane and hoisted it up so the stand could open again.

Easily done but it looks really funny and feels very silly. I wasn't so masochistic that I took pictures, though. ;)

Did you tie a brake on first to make sure it wouldnt roll forward ? :D ~Stef~

It beggars belief, and I can't stop laughing, but why take both wheels off at once?

When I change the tyres, I do them one at a time!

Roy.

Well said - what Muppets.
Bet you thought you'd save time by taking both wheels to the Tyrefitters at once...................won't do that again, will you......... !!!!!!!!!!!

Bit embarrassing that!

I always take both wheels off to go to the tyre fitters, although I don't rely on rope or string tied to the roof.

I raise the front using a bottle jack under the engine block followed by wooden blocks once the front wheel is out then remove the rear wheel.

All very sturdy but I forbid my wife or son going into the garage while it's in this state as I don'think it would take a clumsy person much effort to have it all come tumbling down.

Done this plenty of times on my old K's and twice on the S without problems. I definitely don't have time to make two visits to a tyre fitters.

Cheers

Adam

what i do:

1. take out front wheel.

2. re-fit front axle.

3. place axle stand under the front axle.

4. remove rear wheel.

it'll sit there ok for weeks :)

hindsight is a wonderful thing. Thankyou for sharing that with us, but I had no idea just how clever all the others are, like nobody else ever gets it wrong....or has the candour to share that moment when they do....?
