I went this year with wifey but no kids (yay!). Amazing place. Saw quite a few bikes around, plus some weirdos cycling the ring road. Krafla is well worth a stop.

I think it would be a bit tedious to bike around it - we were in a Discovery 4 which was nice & cosy.
