Hi Folks

I'm getting a bit confused about how so many of you guys can put your side stand down and still have the engine runnng, on my 110GS as soon as the side stand is half way down the engine cuts out, is this right or a sympton of some gone wrong ?

Roddy
....on every bike i've ever owned, sidestand down + ingear = engine cutout. If you're in neutral, no problem. Don't know anything about the 110GS however, so this may be normal (to a BMW engineer at least......probably same guy that came up with the switchgear)

Why isn't it mandatory to have sidestands lock down?
Why wouldn't a manufacturer of presitgious m/c's have an efficient design for a locking sidestand (also eliminating the possibility of riding of with it down)? Especially when a minor tip-over can cost 1000's (e.g. K12LT).
Even Harley understands this...

Agreed Mr. Bull. The Harley set up is the best there is (they can get some fings right) in that the stand locks when under load. However, it doesn't flick up when the load is removed so you can still ride off with it down (unless they've got electronic cut-outs now?). And they stick out a looong way which looks really nice and stable.

If you think BWM design is crap, the Ducati system flicks up when load is removed (well they used to anyway) but it's a pain in the arse in practice cos you have to dismount and hold the stand down before you put weight on it.

I know what you are getting at about the old Duke design, but on my 916 I just push it down with my toe before dismounting and settle the bike on the stand, Likewise on Honda and Yamaha. As for the 12GS I HAVE to do it that way as I am not tall enough to do otherwise.

But the Duke can easily be sorted with some careful work onone side of the spring link plate with files or a Dremel type grinder which soon stops the auto lift.
