Just gave the GSA a once over after returning home from work tonight and noticed that the OEM rear suspension shield is rubbing against the huggger. Pretty :p1zzed:about it given the price of these things - and it's the correct esa version. Any ideas - apart from taking it off!

Take it off and sell it, the Ilmerger looks pretty but actually does very little, a Maier mudsling does a better job of deflecting mud and spray thrown from the rear wheel, just my 0.02c :D

i thought you were supposed to take the original shock guard off then fit the carbon bling thing.

good point...when I bought my used GS it had an Ilmberger already fiited, I've since experienced it banging against (Ithink) the standard rear shock shield, but only when carrying my pillion. Its bloody annoying and ya wouldn't expect that from an item of this cost..

I reckon I'll be taking it off

Anyone wanna buy a Ilmberger hugger :D

I will be selling my Illmberger shortly,(off topic) but what I did on my 2007, non ESA bike, was to remove the plastic shock cover and trim a little off the bottom. I did not need to remove much, perhaps a cm or so.Did the trick nicely. :D
Also, my banging was was not against the shock cover, which made a hole n the Illmberger, but the banging was against the swing arm. There was a protective rubber nipple,to stop this, which disappears, so placing a well glued silicone stop sorted any banging.

Could try trimming a bit off the shield first and see what happens - thing is the BM dealer I bought the bike from fitted it for me so just wondering if I should get them to sort it.

On my 08 bike (with ESA) I took the shock cover off - it doesn't offer any protection to the shock as the hugger prevents spray reaching it. The bike doesn't need both. Also the spring is easier to get at to clean. 13500 miles later and the shock still looks like new.

Hmmm...not thought about that. If I did though and something happened to the rear shock would it invalidate the warranty?

I think the usual conditions regarding the warranty would apply - did the removal contribute to, or not prevent the fault? for example a stone spat at the shock - likely to be stopped by the stronger carbon fibre hugger anyway. If you're a serious off road rider then maybe the hugger is not the right thing to fit - clearance between the tyre/ hugger etc. For road use - not an issue.

+1 - ended up marking the swing arm. Got rid of it an went for a mudsling from Maeir....much better, much cheaper, much quieter.

I've got an Illmberger hugger fitted to my GSA and wouldn't swap it for a mudsling any day! By the way, Illmberger fitting instruations state that when fitting the hugger you should remove the oem rear suspension coil cover (or yes, will catch). No issues with warranty, emailed Illmberger in Germany when fitting my hugger to check this and spoke to my local BMW dealer who stated the same.
