Bit of a mad one, im due to take my test in the next couple of months, and for a first bike i want a GS1200, i have my reason which follow.

I am 6'2" with a really dodgy right knee so the height of the GS should be ideal.
I plan to do a lot of touring both in UK and abroad and again what i have read seems an ideal choice.
Most of my riding when im confident will be two up, my wife is tiny however im 18 stone will the bike be ok for this.

Is this bike the wrong choice for a first bike?
Im a bike nut already i was at this years BMF Peterborough was at the NEC last year and plan to go this year, and hopefully going to the FarmYard bash a s a pillion.

Being 6'2 how comfy will my knee be, i know really i can only answer that but how unbent will it be?

Will insurance be a joke for me?

the bike

should suit you perfectly. It is probably as comfy a bike as you'll find, with the exception of these Goldwing type things, & should happily carry you and the missus. Get a set of Verns big panniers and from your description she'll fit in one of them!

Welcome to the madhouse, enjoy the bike:thumb2

Hi dsb79..

I passed my test at the end of last year and got my first bike shortly after that, a spanking new GSA. Yeah it scares me to death, yes I have dropped it (stationary) and yes it's heavy. From my limited experience, the riding position is great, I feel confident and well positioned and very comfortable.

The more I ride it, so the cheesey grin on my face gets bigger and bigger and every time I put it in the garage, I just can't resist a final glance at it as I close the door. My only regret is not getting into biking earlier in life (always looking but never did it). Friends in Sweden, Dad lives in Spain, kids in Germany. I'll be visiting them all and more.

DO IT!! Before it's too late. You won't regret it.

This is what im looking for cheers Troy, how easy is it to ride normal riding, dont think ill be up for off roading, i have sat on few and hope i can get comfy. Erm time to book my test i think.

how easy is it to ride normal riding
- Easy peasy! I'm a 29 inside leg, so you'll have no problem. Even though the riding position looks high, the centre of gravity feels really low - like a weeble!
I got mine after a 20 year break an no NCD. - insurance was <£200 fully comp at 45.

You'll have no problem. I'm 6'2 and 18 stone and its perfect. Before my GS I had a honda shadow and then a suzuki bandit. I've also ridden a Pan European and a Yamaha FJR 1300 quite a bit (these are among the few alternatives to a GS) and I far prefer the GS to any of the above. I'm riding an 1150 GS adventure. I love it, I cant see myself riding anything else other than a GS. Its high off the ground - a big plus for me. Yes it is heavy but for the bigger man thats really not a problem. Once you get going, even at slow riding speeds ALL the weight disappears. Its like a sports bike in the bends and its a like a tourer on the open roads. For me all the Japanese bikes feel really low and small when you're on them even the big tourers, I just feel bunched up. On the GS I feel like it fits properly, its really stable on the road and just eats up the miles. Its also a great winter bike, I live in the West of Ireland and the roads are really bad and in winter they're treacherous, they're full of holes and strewn with gravel and the GS is so rugged its not a problem for it.

I cant recommend it highly enough. Oh and get the adventure version.

Happy riding!!!!!!:beerjug::JB

6'8".....19 Stone.... and i'm very very comfy..... ( still looks like i'm on a 125!)

still i've always ridden sports bikes..... the wife said last week as she waved me off..... "you don't look such a twat on that thing"...... there is hope:cool:

test ride after you pass your test and you will know

my first bike was a honda cm125 when i was 17.
next bike was a 08 1200gs at 37 and a 18 years off a bike after doing my das

like you a bigish blokw 6'4 like to get out and about hate getting stuck in traffic so a bike it was . looked at lots and found the gs was a great fit not to urgent very forgiving in lots of ways ie Brakes gear selection and it will only go as fast as you twist you wrist .

Not dropped it yet but been very close a few times and all stood still or nearly still

as for insurence when i got it a week after passing my test this time last year

406.72 fully comp from bennetts . just looking at renewing it but not with bennents as they are taking the piss with there qoute but looking like knocking a 100 mquid of the premium for the year .

great bike works for me but it will all be in the test ride take lots out for a good few hours each time and make no decisions till you have been out on a few and never decide just after you just get off as most will bring a biggrin from what i found out

oh and good luck with the test

Don't forget you can also lower the footrest's which will straighten your leg further.

Hang on a minute...

if you are taking your test now arent you going to be on a restricted licence for the next two years?

seat height etc is all well and good, but a 1200 GS choked to 33 BHP is going to be a bit of a dog.

If you are on a restricted licence a 600 might be a better idea...
