Hi, I have just joined and got a problem. Got a 1150GS only had it a few months, its great but went riding the other day, was going to go to Brighton but cut the journey short because I couldn't change down but could the last time I used the bike and its only been in the garage since so dont know what the problem is.
It changes up no problem and occasionally goes down one gear then hits rock hard bottom, after some initial scarry moments i quicky learnt to lift the pedal a nano, must have been 2mm then could change down but had to repeat the process again and again to go back down the gears,
can anyone tell me what the problem is likely to be and how to fix it, many thanks.

:thumbThe rose joint/linkage between the gear lever and the gearbox is know to seize a little causing those symtoms.

Take the whole linkage off, clean it up and re grease...may just sort it...hopefully

Ok thanks guys, will take a look at the weekend, take it off and grease it all up.

Well fcuk me if it's not a blatant build quality issue....
My 1200 did the same thing. I thought, "Oh shit.. I need to buy a gearbox."

Road salt was the culprit. (Not another thread about road salt Please....:))

I pulled the shift lever off the shaft.
Tapped the shaft through the bushes in the bracket (towards the eng. g/box).
Wet-and-dried the shaft.
Cleaned everything with penetrant.
Sprayed everything liberally, including the exhaust pipe, with that white lithium grease out of Halfrauds.

Seems to have alleviated the problem for now. I had attacked the thing previously, hurriedly mind you though just spraying the outsides only lasts till next rain storm.

I've had loads of motorbikes and never ever had one do that.
BMW should do this free for owners or offer a linkage that's fit for use.
Vorspungdorkteckneek my bottom valve...

***Rant over***

Oh and welcome to the circle sussex guy.
I'm new here too so I don't know if I'm permitted to welcome anyone yet... Cripes..

Gears

You will need to take the lever pivot off the foot rest hanger, this is very tight being put on with locktite, heat it up with a hot air gun to release the locktight and it will come undone. Don't forget to use locktight when you put it back otherwise may be a question of oops! no gears when you find the levers fallen off!!.

Had the same problem myself and almost went the route of getting a new gearbox. But the problem was found to be gunk and crud in the linkage. Take it off, clean it up and it should be ok.

Yep ditto - happened to me last year.:thumb2

Its now monday now, back at work, looking out the window and seeing sun, dam, anyway took the whole shifter off yesterdayand cleaned it and greased it all up. There was crud in there. Put it back on and good as new, changes up and down as it should. Had a few more replies to my original message and seems this is a problem quite a few people have had (it also has not once happened to me on any other bike I have had and one of those was a 1980's 500cc moto morini (lovely bike but some idiot didnt see me and knocked me off -twat).
Anyway many thanks to coolcarbon and the stimulator - link to diagram invaluable- your advice was very much appriciated, and got me out the *hit.

phew - thought for a second there was an 1150 with a problem :D

Cant really say it was a maintence problem because I have never had this happen to any of the bikes I have had and dont see it in the service books as a regular thing to do, ie strip down clean up and grease. So it could be a design fault, although that said i am new here and could be corrected or should i say WILL BE CORRECTED......!

I had a big problem with a loose on the splines linkage, amazingly the shop didnt pick it up at services, but probably never road it properly... also thought gearbox finished...

Still not great, but wow better:rob:confused:

Can anyone confirm the allen bolt size to remove the lever.

Was gonna bring the bike up north last night but had to leave it and bring the box up instead as I was having real problems changing gear :thedummy

The reason I ask is that on one of the threads I found, someone said it was a 5.5mm so if it is I will need to get one ASAP for the weekend.

Any info much appreciated :bow
