My iMac appears to be dieing, so in the near future it's going to need replacing.

So the question is do I save up and buy a new one or use some of the spare kit I've got lying around and by a Mac mini for less then half the price?

Anybody using a Mac mini?

Yep, I've had several.

You'll probably miss the nice screen the most, unless you already have a good spare. Memory upgrading is easy, hard drive do-able but not for the fat fingered, everything else is soldered down.

Is your video card on the blink? There's a known problem with some... Hold on ill google it.

It's not this is it... http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5167

No that's not it. It's really old and now it's really slow and nearly every time I do something with it you can virtually hear it thinking. Oh and occasionally it stops working and I get a white screen.

Have you tried backing up your stuff, then re formatting it and re loading the OS..?

No, maybe I should. It's fully backed up using the built in program.

Backed up to a remote hard drive..?

If you're happy with the backup (I'd do two, to different discs), then a re format could sort it out.
