Hi all, i have just imported a R1200GS, go me. Just a quick question, can the digital display that is in KPH be changed to MPH? & Can i just get a MPH dial to replace the KPH one, i have put on an overlay but its just not good enough. if i have to get new clocks anyone any ideas where it can be done without a second mortgage. the bike is on a 54 plate.

thanks beemercarl

Hi Carl,

Not sure about the letter of the law, but I imported my 2000 model 1150GS from South Africa on a KM/h clock and never got any hassle from the MOT guys, did not stick a set of numbers anywhere either.
My 2nd import was a 650 Dakar from Germany, 3 little lines on 30, 50 and 70 mph was more than enough.

If you know where the conversions are, then you should take responsibility for whatever speeds you do, and not exceed.... simple really.

I would not change my clocks to be honest. For mileage, the conversion is 1.6 x 1 to get from Km to Miles.

HTH.

I am a friend of Carls and I think he wants them changed for aesthetic reasons. I am sure its something he is going to do anyway but wants to know if its possible and what the problems are going to be regarding installation and ECU etc etc

i have a set of clocks from my crashed 07 1200gsa with on board puter, to see if they were still working i fitted them to a mates gsa same spec and they worked perfectly, showing the mileage i had covered and all the other RID stuff...any contact i had with bmw told me that clocks have to be matched with the bike, my test says they dont.

I've just imported a bike from Germany back to the UK, while there I had the clocks changed before I came back, the clocks cost about 500euros tax free, the problem is the new clocks wanted to read Mph but the bikes ECU wanted to read in Kph causing a conflict, no doubt Dragonrider tried UK clocks on a UK bike hence him having no problems. The dealer who changed mine had to get the factory to send the program so they could reprogram the ECU to so it thinks it's a UK bike. So if you want the clocks changed it's going to cost and only a dealer can do it. I have heard dealers charging a fortune for reprogramming but it took less than 40minutes for mine once they had the correct ECU program. Hope this helps

keep them coming

Thanks for all the replies, at this stage does anyone have a set of reg 54 clocks uk style, if so i will ask the local dealers what they want in the way of dosh to do the job.

Thanks again all

yep..both uk bikes, maybe thats what bmw where trying to tell me, what was the conflict ned? would like to know from an interested point of veiw. but also when my sh#t is sorted i will be putting my clocks up for sale... maybe(only guarantees is taxes an death)

The conflict was the UK clocks odometer was counting in KM's as thats what the ECU was telling it. It took the German dealer a week to get the program from the factory and reprogram the ECU, the dealer was excellent the whole week, let me have a new triumph Sprint (hated it though) for the week and only charged me for 40mins labour!
