In Abercrave area at the weekend

Mrs msgs1200 is doing her direct access with Kevin and Julia Saunders at worldofbmw so I'm going down at the weekend to offer moral support, staying over Saturday night. Any suggestions of good roads to check out, or even (easy) trails?

It's all pretty good North of Abercrave.

The A4067 itself is nice, all the A40 in Wales is well surfaced, pretty and has wide curves, but gets busy.
The loop Llandovery (stop at the bikers' cafe) via llyn Brianne reservoir and back down Abergwesyn to Llanwrtyd is a favourite of mine. One sweet lil' old 25% hairpin to test your clutch control

Or extend that via Esgair Cerrig and Tregaron then up to Devil's Bridge.

The mountain road back East from Cwmysywyth via the Elan valley reservoirs (Penygarreg etc) down into Rhayder has a scandinavian feel.

The B4358 from Newbridge to Beulah is excellent and usually less policed than the A470.

Up in God's country in the middle of the Principality you can find lots of mountain/forrest tracks which a GS can tackle easily - just take it easy as you are a long way from help and the roads can be very quiet!


If the weather is halfway decent, you can have a fine day or two.

Hi msgs1200, Sorry I would have met up with you for a ride but I'm off to TanHill in Yorkshire for a weekend of off roading. All I can say is there are plenty of A + B roads which are fun to ride with loads of breathtaking scenery (so take a camera, you'll wish you had) as for gentle trails, try some forrestry tracks they're generally easy going. Anyway safe riding and I hope Mrs msgs1200 has a great time.

I hope I have attached a gps track plagerised from this site 2 weeks ago and ridden by me last Saturday.
Stonkin' empty valley. Single track roads with gravel centre - very picturesque. Occassional fast farmer in subaru who didn't expect a bike to be round the corner!

I stayed at a great b&b in Defynnog, where mrs msgs1200 was staying for her course. The owner was a biker as well, (r1200rt) and on Sunday morning decided that having a blat around with me would be much more fun than staying home and washing the cat, so excuses made, and off we went. As I had to get home that day, we did a run out to the Elan valley - spectacular.

And I can't believe the roads here - as soon as you get into Wales they're nicely surfaced, and no cars. What a grin Why can't we have this in England.

Anyway, Steve from the b&b does 30000 a year on his RT, and when out, as he puts it, "makes progress". I began to regret not taking the knobblies off and perhaps packing slightly less, but we did embarrass a few sports bike riders when a luggaged-up GS1200 on knobblies and a 70000 mile RT ridden by an old fella went round the outside of them as they were busy getting their knees down

The day was badly marred however when on the way home on the a49 between Hereford and Ross I came round a corner and found a 4 bike pile up, with sadly at least 2 fatalities, and bikes that someone would need to take home in a box. Did what I could, but I wasn't a direct witness (it must have happened about 1 min before I got there. Very sad, one of the groups was a father and 2 sons. My heartfelt condolences to all concerned.



So thanks for all your help.

Further to yesterday's media appeal, police can now confirm the age of a motorcycle rider killed in a collision on the A49 at Callow on Sunday, June 17.

Rory Kilgannon, who was 36 and from Newport in Gwent, was the rider of a Kawasaki motorcycle which was in collision with a Suzuki motorcycle at around 3.20pm. The rider of the Suzuki motorcycle - Grzegorz Majewski, a 29 year old Polish national from Hampton Bishop - also died in the collision.

Two other motorcyles were also involved and the riders of both were taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision, which occurred on the three-lane section of the A49 on the Callow hill.

The polish guy and his mate were coming down the hill, in a single lane with double white lines. The 4 welsh guys were going up the hill, with 2 lanes. Rory, the guy that died, ended up with his bike, a green Kawa of some sort, in the hedge on the far right of the road. His body was in the right hand carriageway behind a car. The polish guy ended up on the wrong side of the crash barrier on the left hand side of the road, with his bike, looked like a 650 Bandit, on the left hand verge.

I can't see how they were both in the same bit of road at the same time.

One of the worst accidents I've seen.
