In need of tech info

Hi all,
need some help & info on ignition problems with this F650GS 2002 been sat on the drive for a couple of months, all running fine when i left it, now nothing. Turns over fuel is fine but no spark, also noticed indicators, lights and break lights working now and again, looks like wireing loom or bad earthin as all fuse's are ok, can any one help on this as i'm now starting to pull my hair out, ( whats left any way)

howdee by the way

try obvious first

battery (test with multimeter rather than rely on optimate charge)
plugs
coil
and fuel. (even though you say its fine)

While its been standing, have you done any work on it? removed the plastic tank cover to get to the battery and dislodged the jump start terminal?

oh just thought, have you tried a re-set.

ignition off, turn on and fully twist throttle, release, twist again turn off.

turn on again and press starter?

may work, but if not

As part of the process, it's worth using the carb float bowl drain screw to let go any water (condensation). My 650, after a winter lay up, started and ran for about 5 minutes down the road before dying completely. Kind AA man did the float bowl stuff and off I went - happy as a happy thing. Might not be the problem but it's quick and easy enough to do. Good luck

Thanks for your quick responce, done everything you have suggested, battery is new. now you no why i'm pulling my hair out, i have been told that these bikes do suffer with loom problems have to trace all back to see if any are broke inside the loom.

who told you about loom problems, first time iv heard that.
normally pretty good, although they are prone to being temperamental hence the re-set info.

i would think its something simple if all you did was lay it up for a few months, or is it new to you and been stood?

No the bike not new to me, regarding loom problems, its just something i have read on another site, but could well be a load of ball, but you know what its like
you start to beleave everything some people say, this site seems to have alot more information, i wll let you know how i get on with it today.

Have you tried using our search facility here? If you type in a key word it'll dip you into alot of our archived threads .... there's bound to be some information there for you, free for the taking.

Hi All,

I have found a double relay( motronic/load relief relay) with alot of corrosion does any body know what these are for, as this seems to be one problem with ignition, lights, horn, indicaters working intermitantly when i move the wireing loom around this area.

I know absolutely nothing about the 650 models, but I do know that Motronic is the injection/ignition system BMW uses on its models.

My guess is that you've found the cause of your problem.

Can you clean up the corrosion enough to get it working and prove the defect ?? Obviously it needs a long-term repair either way.

If you have a wiring diagram, can the relay socket be 'hot wired' as a temporary test method to energise the circuit being switched and then see if the bike starts?

Cheers for that, problem now solved, it was these 2 relays that was causing all the problems, bike is now running after alot of cleaning of corrosion around the plugs & terminals.

if anybody else has any trouble like i had, its worth checking these relays as quite alot of other components also run through these.

There is a recall notice regarding the loom,see this thread which includes a link to pictures of my loom faults which might give you an idea of what's involved.

Twisting the throttle with the ignition off does absolutely nothing! To do a 'reset' either disconnect the battery or remove the BMS plug.
