Just saw this article on the MCN website.
It is in the Used Bike section so I'm not sure whether this just relates to extended warranties.
You'll see that BWM are quoted and of course, good old UK is happy to go ahead whilst France, Germany and Ireland will just ignore it... no change there then:(
I couldn't find the Daily Telegraph article, has anyone seen it?

I think this is a home grown thing and not EU.

The FSA have decided that vehicle warranties now fall within their control. Well that 'll give us a lot more protection won't it and I'm sure the extra cost will be worth it. Ha! The FSA are the biggest bureaucratic PITA.

I'm surprised the car industry didn't lobby harder; travel companies got an exemption for travel insurance.

As I understand it, the approved used warranties are not affected as they are guarenteed by BMW GB, but the sold at service warranties and extensions sold when the original warranty supplied with the bike will be.
These have to be covered by an insurance company so will almost double in price!
Apparently the EU produced an 8 page draft and the FSA turned it into over 200. Sounds familar!
BMW has used the time to check on what warranty repairs are costing them, so the increase is not all down to the FSA but the unreliability of the product.
Rememeber a warranty would cost nothing if you never needed to claim!

Just got the extension

I had five minutes left to renew my warranty, £344 which I believe is £94 for the break down service, so £250 for the warranty. As of now they want £500 - £600 (Not sure) for the same thing.

Its Crap, its all money money money, good old rip off Britian....

Who the hell is this rule supposed to be helping? Certainly not the consumer, since we now pay twice as much for the same product. And presumably not the manufacturer? I'm guessing they make money out of warranties as with everything else, and now they'll be selling fewer. Or am I the only one who can't afford to stump up £600 for another 12 months cover?

Is this just more pen-pushers justifying their own existence?

So do what I do and don't buy these warranties, put the money away and use that if the bike breaks down. I know its a risk, but over the years, I probably paid out literally a few grand on TV, washing machine, dishwasher etc how many have broke down, none, oh except the dishwasher which will cost me the price of a new pump. If everyone took the same attitude, you watch the prices drop

Well, the price hike worked. If you keep the warranty, you have to keep the servicing up = more cost. As the bike is getting older, it is more likely that bits will begin to fail = more cost. I was faced with two new tyres, a major service, road tax AND the increased warranty price increase. All this added up to over 1000 pounds - just to keep what I have. Decided to px my bike instead. At least the new one will have 30K miles less. Prehaps that this is the whole idea?

I've had my dishwasher 13 years, never broken down once either. A bit of TLC, take her out to dinner every now and then. Should last a while yet.

£344 for extending your waranty (this is the figure I've been quoted by BMW) is money well spent.
Considering the amount of work that has been done on my bike in it's first two years under waranty - New clutch alone would be more than that.

Crap bike, equals expensive warrantee. If a product is reliable then the warrantee is relatively cheap. Several years ago I found that when buying a washing machine, the warrantee on a Bosch machine was cheaper than the rest. So I bought the machine, but not the warrantee.

Best solution, sell it on before the warrantee expires. Disgruntled GS 1150 integral ABS owner.
