Hi all

My wife is urging me to emigrate with her back to her home in Australia.

But she knows bugger all about whether there is good biking fun to be had in either Brisbane, or Sydney. Which currently is one of the sticking points for me.

Just for info, I ride a 1150 GS and a Gixxer Thou. The GS I use to go for tours, commuting, fun etc, and the Gixxer is my toy for a very early Sunday morning route, make that every sunday morning from March to September, and the route is done before anyone in blue is up and about.

If anyone in the know can tell me, are there many good fast road / offroad routes ? Is it even possible to ride a motorbike too fast in Aus.

So will I be able to continue biking like I am now, in Aus ?

Last time I was there - I struggled to see anyone even riding a motorcycle. It was christmas, so probably far too hot to be on anything that didn't have Air Con.

cheers

Lets see....

There are many great biking roads in and around the Brisbane area. The mountains are only 1-2 hours ride away and you could spend all day up there on reasonably decent roads. A 10 hour ride would even get you to my place. :) There would be plenty of GS type roads as well within a 2 hour radius. Throw in the beaches like the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast and you have it made. As for the heat, while it gets hot down there it is nothing like the tropics where I live. The other weekend we went for a ride at 5:00pm and I couldn't get my arms in my jacket as the sweat kept the lining sticking to my skin and I couldn't push my arm in! Not so bad once you get moving though. The downside is the heavily policed roads in Aus where the max speed limit is only 100 or 110km/h and you only have to exceed it by 40km to score a loss of license and a trip to court!

Can't really vouch for Sydney but it is much the same only colder (sometimes).

As a pom who has spent three and a bit years in NZ and three and a bit weeks in Perth WA.

A friend of mine's got a place at Agnes Water, nr Seventeen Seventy.

He keeps on about me taking a trip there, i know its a way south from you but is it a good area for a couple of weeks, i like my fishing and messing about in boats, trucks and on bikes (he's got a land cruiser there, but no bikes unfortunately:()

Nice area?? Its a long way to go if its crap:nenau

From a sydney point of view, i'd have to say its different to the uk.

There are good roads - but they are few and far between - not like uk where they are every 5 miles - try 50 miles.

theres not that many roads here - mainly large and curvy, and empty out of town.

i think you'd get very bored after a while having a gixxer thou.

the cops over here are particularly ruthless, with no discussions or telling off - you'll get done for every little thing.
And theres lots of them - and they have fwd facing radar on their cars - and they do U'turns to chase you.

You have to travel at least an hour to get to the start of any decent roads from where i am - then you're into the blue mountains to the west or the national parks to the south - or the watagan mountains to the north.
All great areas for sure - but not on your doorstep.

Lots of people seem to have big sports bikes - but i can't see the point. A GS is absolutley perfect for over here.

Having said all that - i'd choose Sydney over Brisbane - for the general climate is better IMO

The sis in laws have just emigrated - then bought a camper and travelled all round Aus - then did the south island of NZ

They prefer NZ for the roads and history so far.

As other folks have said, life on the other side of the planet is very different to life in the UK. Some of it's good, some of it's bad, some of it's just different.

For me, what it boils down to is, give it a go with a positive attitude, and if you really don't like it you can always pick up the pieces of your former life. I suppose what I'm saying is that I think it's far better to try something and regret trying, rather than not risk it and live with the feelings of ... “what if?”

Location wise: Apparently a former colleague relocated to Brisbane early last year. By the middle of the year his missus, was going through the normal feelings of missing “home” after the initial buzz had worn off and wanted to go back to the UK. He said “sure you can go back to the UK, but me and the kids are staying”.

There is a wealth of information on rides around Brisbane, and all over Australia, here:

From my perspective, there are a heap of great roads in the nearby mountains (closest being Mount Glorious right on the doorstep).

Aaron, I lived in Sydney for many years and used a R100 pd as transport and found the increase in traffic density inhibited my bike enjoyment. for rides it meant getting out of town early or forget it.I have since moved to the Sunshine coast still got the PD and also a 1200 GSA and found adventure roads all over the state. Sealed and unsealed roads with little traffic make Qld bike heaven in my case.:clap

Out of Sydney, there's heaps of nice roads, back tracks and the like, it's R-GS friendly... outside of Brisbane... it's Heaven..

But hey, what would I know?

:)

Best of all, within a thousand K's there's so MUCH to explore.. and every 50-100k's spacing near the coast there's generally a small town...

Over here in WA, the spacing's greater, the mountains are fewer..

having spent the last 3 months in Aus, I would try and avoid the queensland area. Approx 2/3rds of it is flooded, which roughly equates to a size of Belgium. I dont think that is a good area for biking at the moment.

Sydney is having a housing crisis so, you may find it hard to get on the property ladder.

Otherwise, its Australia man..get on with it!!:oonyack

The water seems to have gone now but. Although it is raining again today, but thats Easter for you... :blast

Easy. Have a look here and check out this mag. They sent it to the UK for me.

Personally, I would say SEQLD is the go, and judging by the increase of mexicans (NSW and VIC people) moving up I must be right. It's winter now, and today it's a nice 25 degrees. In summer it's warm but not too bad, and I'm Dutch, so I should qualify to comment. Just get one of those mesh jackets and you're laughing. It's a GS paradise. Maybe even better with a large duel sport and a little 250 shit kicker for the trail.

Never mind the other comments. Saying not to QLD because of flooding is like being worried about your cellar in London because of the Rhine breaking it's banks.
Saying that, apparently I missed a good storm while I was living in London. Hmmm.

You know what. Go to NSW, it's too bloody crowded up here anyway. :hide

I have been here almost 6 months and live in Sydney. I still get the e-mails from "home" and read the bbc website etc. I have no interest in going back even for a holiday!
If you dont do it you will just sit there and think what if!!:nenau
