Hi , I've got a bit of a problem (Yes I've tried ointment !) Roy at RGM is building a new motor for my GSA . What's happened is the bottom of the piston is hitting the crankcase on the new crankcase . The original engine is eng no : 122EB23036116 and is an '03 GSA ( the crank is completely shot ), the new crankcase and crank is eng no : 122EA21996881 . The conrods are the same part number . He thinks that the new crankcase is possibly from an 1100S ? Anybody got any ideas ?( Good ones ! ) Other than skip the whole thing , Thanks in anticipation , Glenn

Check the gearbox mounts, it wont fit if its an 1100 anyway?

engine cases

Thanks for that ,will check. I suppose I need to identify what model the engine is from , Cheers Glenn ps ; Out of interest anyone got a spare engine for a GS1150 ?

Try Turnipbmw-he had a couple for sale a few months ago and still had a short 1150 motor a few weeks ago.

Thanks Colban, I think I may have figured it out ! I think the crankcases and conrods are either 1150 RT/RS , the pistons and heads are different to the GS , the barrels + conrods are all the same across the 1150 range . I think I will have to fit RS/RT pistons + heads . So thats what I may need . Glenn:thumb

Crankcases

Hi Colban , I actually bought one of the short engines from Turnipbmw (This is the one I'm trying to identify and causing the problem for Roy) ! That was sold as an 1150 , so (apparently) should be interchangeable across the 1150 range , I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong !This whole thing is proving a costly business as it's cost a couple of hundred to rebuild and now it will possible need stripping down and built into the original cases . Cheers Glenn :tears

Am I being too optimistic but can't you fit the 'replacement' crankshaft into the original engine cases for some reason? If the 1150 barrels and conrods are identical across the range, surely the throw of the crank must be the same also to give it 1150cc displacement ??

Is the original crank too far gone for a regrind and new shells?

crankcase

Hi Adam , The original crankshaft is "goosed" . The "plan" was to buy a good short motor and bolt everything off the old motor on . I may have confused people , I'm unsure as to whether the "new" one is an 1100 or an 1150 , as I've already mentioned the part no's on the conrods are the same , the mechanic has e-mailed B*W to try and identify if it's an 1100/1150 . Plan "B" is to build the crankshaft into the old cases , Glenn

Ah, I see. I presume you have tried all the usual suspects like Motorworks, Sherlocks, Steptoe's Yard, various Bike breakers online, eBay etc. There a guy on eBay called RC Mawer who always seems to get BM's, maybe he would be worth contacting via his eBay online shop ? His shop says he is breaking an 1150RT ?

A short engine would deffo be the easiest way and save all that faffing around, and be even quicker than plan 'B'.

Good luck.:thumb2

Crankcases

Hi Adam , I've just found out from Motorworks it's a 1200C motor !! . I'm now going to try and work out a part exchange deal with this motor for an 1150 GS motor and take up with Turnipbmw the fact that it was advertised and sold to me as an 1150 , Thank you for your interest and suggestions , Regards Glenn:thumb2
