It was time to do the filter visit. It was kind of loud at idle but I had nothing to compare with. Every so often it would screech on take off from standstill.
At first I blamed the alternator belt and went in a few times. It must have thought I was looking for a long term relationship.
Anyway having read a lot and looked at videos I went in. This is my first EFI bike and I was suitably terrified.
Waited for the low fuel level light and then some. Got a liter or so at the fuel lines.
First off, the HP feed line at the tank was loose and damp. I pulled it off without touching the mangled clip. The external vent lines featured aquarium tubing, cable ties, etc etc. Mess.
I can confirm that at that fuel level with the tank on it's side the plate can be opened without spilling fuel, well just a little bit.
The vent lines made it impossible to lift the plate clear but I recall Steptoe saying the filter could be done without opening them. Hmmm. Took them off. More of this later.
I was mindful of the float arm but it didn't have one. Thought I'd broken it before I saw the float switch. Then this black floating thing hove into view. Figured out it was the tank vent thing.
With the pump out the first thing I saw was the filter install date scratched on it. 01-12-07 20000km.
Next thing was the oetker clips were not closed. I could rotate most of them with gentle finger pressure. The u tube and other hoses were good as new. The filter was clear. The pump screen had a crack at the end seam. I figured that the screeching was down to loose clips. Sorted them out.
Next I went to visit the filler cap. It had been fitted with one of those magnetic bag things and I wanted to put the black plastic vent thing back on anyway and was curious.
Looks like the cap baseplate was put back wrong and that's why there was no slack at the vent lines at the pump end. Rotated to a different position and got about 2 - 3 inches back on the vent lines.
Stitched it all back up, admiring the lack of leaks and a now much quieter pump with no screeching and what do I see in my hand. The bloody pump screen bag thing.
It was a lot quicker the second time :)

Just something to mention, but there are 2 mods I would recommend when doing something like this:
- while it’s out, make a hole in the filler neck (drill or cut) as it allows air to come out much better when filling the tank. It also gives around 2 litres extra capacity
- rotate the filler cap 180° so it lifts forwards instead of backwards. It makes it much easier to get the fuel filler in and is easier when using a tankbag
