OK, so after the bungled theft of my new GS the insurance has gone through the roof. Whilst 'negotiating' options I was told the GS would be more expensive anyway since it is in a different insurance category to the 1100 GS I used to have. Old GS category 16, new GS category 99 - the maximum there is. This was from BMW Motorrad/ whoever they are these days, so I was perplexed at the lack of explanation.

Was I just being fed the brown stuff, or is there a reason for the 1200GS being radically different in the eyes of the insurance company?

I guess the theory will be there are more R12's, so more nickable for spares.

Insurance catagory is a load of rubbish anyway. If you want a cheap deal you need to shop around. Every year doing that I'll get quotes from the 300's it normally costs me to the thousands.

Good luck!

Insurance companies are rubbish, when I changed bikes I had one tell me that the 12GS would be more to insure than my R1 as it was a powerful 1200, and the R1 was a weedy 1000 :blast Turned out I could insure it for half the premium I paid for the R1.

Keep ringing around until you get someone who knows what they are doing, nearer the end of the month is good as they have targets to meet and you'll get a cracking deal :rob

I changed one of my bikes from a 1050 Speed triple to a 1200 GSA and got a £20 refund:JB

To insure an 07 R1 would cost me £2000 fully comp in London. 06 GSA is £320 fully comp. Try Aquote Insurance and good luck!

Just insured both an '06 1200GS and an '02 Ducati 998 for £159 fully comp.

Ring round until you find someone desperate for your business.
