Was just about to pick up the phone to order my Remus Revolution & Y piece after reading the numerous articles detailing the advantages when I came across comments about invalidation of insurance, & BM insurance not covering any performance enhancing mods.

Now I'm afraid I'll be paranoid every time I ride my bike if l fit the aforementioned mods. What does everyone else do? Has anyone else told BM insurance about these mods & what was their response. I'm not bothered about major top end power gains but would like to get rid of the noticeable dip in the torque curve to improve midrange & crisp up the throttle response. Am l correct in my thinking that even if your insurance was invalidated for yourself & bike the third party aspect would still be operable - or is that pie in the sky!

Hi Adrian,

I fitted a Y piece with a road legal can, told the insurance that I needed it to go abroad due to the possible need to run on shitty petrol. ie: the cat would not allow it and so had to be replaced. No performance enhancement so no change to the cover. I've now also fitted a Remus can which has been e-marked so it's legal.

HTH,

my "y" piece is listed on my ins cert as a specalised exhaust and covered to the value of a standard pipe and no more.
as long as the can is e marked which it is in the case of a remus revolution.

and that is with BMW insurance.:shoot:

It's pretty straightforward. If you alter your bike - declare it to your insurers. They will either increase your premium or not. The result in either case will be that you will be covered by your insurance.

Insurance cover is not a matter about which I'm willing to accept any uncertainty.....

Mike:)

(All mods declared to BMW Insurance - no extra premium)

Adrian, Think about it

If you think about it you can't possibly alter the performance of the engine in terms of power output by fitting an exhaust and Y piece, that can only be done by changing the programming of the motronic engine managment and cams etc.

What you can do is maximise what is already there and improve the low & mid range running, eliminate the surging if its present and allow the engine to breath and use the fuel more efficiently.

It will still be 90 bhp or whatever it was from the factory, there will be no gain in bhp, it can't happen, it will feel better but it can't gain bhp, so no difference in the insurance, as the after market can and Y piece are cheaper to replace than the factory ones in the event of damage.

While on a recent trip to Spain we had to stop to refuel, the station had run out of unleaded but did have 98 leaded, as we have no cats this was no problem we just filled up with leaded, now the satnav showed the next fuel to be 35 k away, we probably would have made it alright assuming the station was open and had unleaded fuel but the lack of a cat removed the problem.

By all means tell your insurers but don't let them badger you, for the most part they know bugger all.

Equity Red Star charged me £25 extra for a Remus evolution(legal) with a Y piece. Why don't you get charged for an after market replacement car exhaust? Insurance for a bike always seems to have more ways for the insurance companies to get that little bit extra from you.
