Looking for an intercom for looming trip.

Never really needed one before so my knowledge is very minimal 🫣

Solo rider ; won’t be used with a pillion but wanting to be able to pair to a mate who I’ll be doing the trip with.

Do they have to match or will they link together so we won’t need matching units ?

Probably a dumb couple of question but if you don’t ask you won’t know ;

If we are paired together do you have to press a button to speak or is it a case of just talking ?
If one of us received a phone call would this come through to both riders or just who’s received the phone call?

Any recommendations to ones to look at?

Thanks in advance 👍

Majority do link up with other brands of intercom.

This one is as cheap (from a decent brand) as you can get. Given the price, it is fairly basic on spec, but it will do a good job of keeping you connected and chatting with your mate.

What features would you see by spending a few more quid?

I have a Sena 30K which is a bit old now.

I’ve paired it up with another rider using Bluetooth (universal) and a non-Sena headset and it was fine. It’s just like an open channel (you can mute yourself by a button). You can even listen to music whilst in comms mode - and you can use the app to control whether the music is also played to other participants.

I’ve also used it with another rider via Mesh mode. Mesh mode supports more than one other participant, but I think the mesh is only compatible with other Sena units.

Phone calls don’t come through to the other participants - but whilst the call is in progress you won’t be get anything else apart from the phone call.

Seems Sena also do a cheap basic model too - https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/295166 - I don’t think it has mesh built in for group chats though.

Better speakers is one feature for sure, If you like listening to music, then its a must.

What we do not know, is what you expecting from the unit.
Do you wish simply be able to communicate with your mate?
Do you want to listen to music?
Answer and make phone calls?
You by the sound of it, definitely do not need MESH connectivity.

it’ll pair to my phone which will be connected to a aoocci c6 pro ; I’ll be using the navigation so would be ideal if it gave me directions etc (which I assume will be the case)

If I need to make or receive calls aswell that would be ideal.

Music would be great but not essential.

I would think that both the basic units linked above should do this.

More money buys more features (mesh, better speakers, maybe a built-in camera).

If you use in-ears (I do), check if the headset supports this. For instance - I don’t think that the Shark branded intercom for their helmets have a mini jack output for this.

The unit (see post 2) that I have linked, will do all of the stuff you asking for. The only thing that it will not do, is play radio from the unit it self, as it hasn’t got a built in radio receiver. You will however be able to use radio tuning apps such as BBC Sounds. Use Spotify, Amazon or Apple Music, etc. Hear you navigation instructions, answer and make phone calls, hear your incoming text messages as well as respond to them via dictation.

if your have two helmets, you might want to buy second helmet kit at same time. Buy a new helmet (if needed), and get VAT off the lot too.

Yeah I was thinking about a new helmet ; been looking at an adventure style and then just leave the intercom fitted to that.

I don’t think I’ll ever use the intercom on my gsxr

I have a BMW Connected Ride Com U1 you can have for £75, posted.
It's the same unit as the SENA 50r but uses the BMW firmware that has Mesh 2, Bluetooth connection and HD speakers. This unit is a waterproof version of the 50S. You need to connect to the phone app to make changes to the settings etc, it won't work from connecting to a computer. But that doesn't prevent anything from working.

It's yours if you're interested.
