Just put up an article of the French Kapten GPS. It's quite interesting for us, since it doesnt' have a screen! It's voice only, and includes a 4 Gb MP3 player and FM Radio.

You can even get audio guides for specific tourist parts...

It features voice recognition, so you tell it where you want to go, and then listen to the instructions.

Would this be safer than a screen on your handlebar that might distract you?

At this moment, it's only available in France but that'll change I'm sure.

Kapten Screenless GPS

I've decided that it's a GPS-enabled mobile phone/PDA without a screen and keyboard.
Hmmmm.....

I'm skeptical. Anyone who has used a satnav for a while will have experienced being incorrectly told that they are on a nearby road, or in completely the wrong place - TomTom on my PDA went through a phase of telling me that I was off the west coast of Gibraltar, while on the southern loop of the M25! Because of this, no matter what the voice instruction, I always refer to the screen before I react, just to make sure that it's not got confused. Personally, I wouldn't buy an audio-only GPS for the bike, but I admit it may well work as an audio guide for walking around cities etc.
