Intermitent sarting problem

Have recently had a starting problem with my 2002 1150. Starts perfectly from cold, go out for a run stop leave for 5/10 minutes. When I come to restart the engine catches (fires once maybe) then starter continues on its own. I thought it was the starter so took off and tested with car battery and all is fine, cleaned the starter up while it was out.

I don't think it is the battery that keeps trying to start the bike and turns it over at a good speed, the bike as done 22,000 miles, is coming up for the big service at 24,000. Today I thought I was going to have to jump start it.

Have searched the forum but cannot find a similar problem, I did wonder whether the spark plugs were getting a bit tired, but that does not explain the perfect cold starting. The bike sits on an optimate when in garage and has a gel battery.

Check the starter button or solenoid are not sticking:confused:

Plus One here one what you reckon, A good dose of ACF50 in the switch

Tufty Did you ever try to start the bike with a really discharged battery and it turned over really really sluggishly? If So It's quite possible that the low voltage put a lot more load on the contacts and burned them and makes it difficult for it to disengage?

I'd check the switch primarily anyway as it's an easy strip and check

If you're taking off the starter then disconnect the negative lead at the battery (you should be able to just lift the rear of the tank rather than remove it to make it easy)

OK! what is the correct/easiest way to get at the starter switch? Just been out to the bike and took out a couple of screws which seem to be holding the switch covers in place but still no action, do not want to force it.

have a go. if it breaks buy a new piece. If you can't fix it, bring it to the dealer. Best to know a man with a van:augie

Screws 3 and 4 in the diagram it may slide up a wee bit to clear some lugs
