Internet Access on the Move.

Looks interesting.

There's no sound so the clever bods can't even set up VOIP to turn it into a phone- I like the fact that it will deal with IM though so you could use it for Gmail talk, skype, ICQ etc etc so you do have real-time communication with home if necessary.

They say that the roaming costs abroad are '£14.99' but not what for....per hour or per MB? That's expensive- on most data deals it's about £6 per MB.

This thing is also not going to be able to do any GPS type stuff or use any other windoze apps, so for that reason I reckon it'd be better to spend another £50 and get a netbook with a data contract and be able to do everything, including using wifi hotpsots to use VOIP, loading waypoints and getting tracklogs off a GPS and saving photos taken on the trip.

CErtainly worth watching though to see what they come up with next :thumb2

I've just seen this on a camping web page :augie...

........could be the answer to having web connection on the bike while travelling, in an affordable and compact package?

Anyone out there used one of these???

Hi DB - yep, I've got one - very handy bit of kit - works everywhere I've been with it so far. You've just missed a Maplins sale offer - £129.99 - dunno if they've discontinued stocking them.

Great for email on the move - but no storage for programs. I find that web pages with a lot of graphical content take a while to load - but you've got 20 hours a month airtime - never even managed to use half that!!

I would recommend it - wouldn't chose to use it abroad, though - tightarse!!

If you do decide to get one - I have a brand new case you can have for it - PM me.

Why not just get a netbook like an acer aspire one and a 3g dongle then you can connect anywhere you like and have the full functions of a laptop.

I just thought this might have been a cheaper option...even though a compromise on functions.

laptop

I have tried all sorts of different things.. IPAQ's .. these web-lite devices...

the best solution is a small form laptop with Wifi, I have a dell.

used universal power adaptor to charge on the bike.. ..

use it for storing photos, video.. and uploading them to picasaweb

and for watching movies / tv and making phone calls while you are away... handy out..

but if you did want something cheap and lite.. then the ASUS EE laptop is a good bet

It measures just 225mm wide and 170mm deep, and including its power adapter weighs only 1.12kg. The device on its own is a featherweight 928g.

and a laptop for 170 quid is not bad

Just bought one of these, but my vodafone dongle is not compatible, cos it's operating system is linux, all the bods say I have to install windows xp for it to work. So now looking for a fully licensed copy of xp, and someonr to install. PC world want £150 to do the job, nearly as much as the notebook!
Wouldn't mind keeping linux as it is quick and easy, but cant seem to find a mobile dongle that is compatible.

It would surprise me a great deal if a linux geek hadn't got it to work.......

I just Googled "usb dongle on linux" and it came up with many pages on the subject.......seems quite a lot of USB dongles have been made to work though on glancing through a couple of pages you may need to do a bit of reading and maybe get a geek to help you......worth spending an hour or two sticking your particular dongle's model type and 'linux' into Google to see what comes up though ;)

Thanks Fanum, I've done a bit of trawling through does confuse me a bit I have to say. Even Linux say a usb dongle will work, but they don't say how!

Have posted on the cmputer section.
