Hi guys

I'm looking for a bit of advise, I've one of the BMW accessory plugs and an iPhone 5 charger, anyone know if I can wire the charger into it so I can use the socket on the bike? Or do I have to go the cigarette socket route?

I've not seen a hella plug with USB socket in it - so I would say the cig socket with a double USB plug (cheap off e-bay) in it - is the way to go?

Powerlet is your friend.

They do assorted plugs, including but not limited to a Hella plug moulded into a dual USB adapter 2.1A.

They are an American company but have several UK agents. I use BykeBitz for mine.

I just have a USB socket wired to the ignition which powers my phone. A bit single use really but it works.

Ooh that looks like it could be a goer, I actually have the socket up on my beak beside the dash so wouldn't actually need much length at all, thanks folks

Before it dawned on me that most places have electricity, coming out of the walls, I was keen on charging all sorts of bits and bobs. I found Powerlet products first class. Not cheap but very well made. Buy with confidence.

I noticed that when I plugged my iPhone into the Hella socket - with an adaptor and a car charger it only charged when on the move with the engine running - I was expecting to be able to charge it from the bike whilst camped - is this normal??

Hella socket is obviously (presumably) wired to the ignition circuit. This is to save numpty owners leaving something plugged into the otherwise live socket, then wandering off to engage in biker banter with like minded souls, only to return hours / days / weeks later to find their awesome steed kaput.... as they have flattened the battery.

PS Avoid camping, stay in a hotel. The electricity comes straight out of the walls, via a handy socket, with switch. It takes all the mystery out of it.

I have now read the manual and it reveals;

Operating electrical
accessories

You can start using electrical ac- cessories only when the ignition is switched on. The accessory remains operational if the ignition is subsequently switched off. In
Accessories
order to ensure that the drain on the on-board power supply sys- tem is minimised, the supply to the power socket is cut off ap- proximately 15 minutes after the ignition is switched off, and it is also temporarily interrupted dur- ing the start procedure.

The canbus system switches power to the accesory socket off after 10 minutes or so when the ignition is off, that is why you cannot charge the battery up via the accesory socket with a normal charger like on the 1150

I have now read the manual....

You have joined an incredibly short list of blokes who have ever read the manual for anything.
