Hi:

Can anyone recommend best free programs for:

Converting HD .mov files to mpeg or avi to make the file smaller?

Copying Ipod contents to Itunes?

Ta

Try a program called handbrake. It does pretty much every conversion and compression. You should be able to download it from here:

http://handbrake.fr/

What makes it better is that its open source, so free and works

Funny that, tried handbrake last year and it would not work, just updated to new version and appears to work, but 8 hours to convert a DVD to MP4....

Any tips on how to speed it up, the objective is to put on Ipod classic and Ipod touch

DVD to iPod touch in about 1:1 time is do-able on a Mac Mini. I use RipIt.app to pull the data onto the hard-drive, and then Elgato turbo.264 to encode the mpeg2 to h.264. There' a preset for the ipod/iphone resolution and optimum data rate.

skip the dvd and download the movie in an easier to manage format such as .avi then transcode with visual hub.
also, there are forums that have movies listed in ipod format right off the bat :)

Used Xilisoft iPod Video Converter to turn 170mb HD .mov file into 5mb mp4 file which works on ipod classic.
Thanks for tips,
Bin
