I passed on saturday on our D5 highway large group or 1150/1200GS bikes with british plates. I just though that will ask, if it´s a group of people from this forum or not. Leader had on the bike large stickers "BMW motorsports" or so. All bikes seems to be "like new", lots of cases and luggage etc.

Anyway, we will have next weekend (3-5. 6. 2005) BMW rally at nice place just about 70km north from Prague. Expected about 250 bikes from many coutries. All kind of rally/meeting actions including true offroad ride-out option (in the ex-military area) etc. If you want, join us. It´s not as crazy far away. I plan to do ride to UK week after for couple of days. I know, annoying motorways at Germany - but - beer cost here only about 1euro or less, we have unlimited offroad riding possibilities and you will explore biker friendly country! More info:

Sorry - Not in that group, but will be in Prague next week. Will be too late for the meeting, which is a pity.

Any advice on Prague?

And would you know a good place to stay for a night somewhere on highway 4 towards the German border?? Vimperk direction...

Thanks
Chis

Are you going by bike?
Prague - well, you need to tell, what are you looking for? Nightlife? Historical places? Describe...

Where to stay on the way to Germany? I don´t know Pisek or Strakonice so much, never spent there night (it´s just hour ride from Prague), but I can definitelly advice good hotel owned by a friend on the way between Prague and Pisek (close to a town Pribram just about 5 minutes ride from the end of the motorway to Pisek/Strakonice). His hotel is quite OK and if he will know, that you know me, he will make you good price etc... Let me know, if it helps.
But if you will look at any of above mentioned towns, I´m sure you will come decent place where you can stay. South is very nice... You will see. Nice ride even on country roads from friend´s place to Vimperk and to border. I like that route, using it often (then direction to Passau probably...)

Let me know details or write me on wildstar (at) wildstar.cz

Czech visit

Hi Tomas,

We visited the Czech Rep last week, but only for a 2 night stop over in a town called Miedyllesie in the North East and Olomouic further South having travelled down from Gdansk in Poland crossing the border South of Klozcow. We left the next morning for Osweicim.

Saw lots of GS's on the road.

Well, then it was definitelly different group. At least 8 bikes from UK. I spotted them on D5 highway (from Pilsen direction to Prague).

Tomas, thanks - yes, I will be on the bike. Hopefully I won't have to use it once I get to Prague, as I hear the beer is quite drinkable...

My departure route will take me south on to Passau and beyond... but I'm going to stay somewhere in that direction within the Czech border on the Wednesday evening. I'll look those places up. Vimperk was about the right sort of distance.

Cheers
Chis.

Give me a call when you will be at Prague. +420602349970 or text me!!! We can have a beer together

I might well take you up on that - depends what the conference has in store...

Thanks
Chis

Tomas - Looks like our paths might not cross, but thank you for your texted advice and assistance.

I'll be heading off in the Vimperk direction, in spite of the somewhat disappointing weather. (For those enjoying the good weather back in the UK, the high pressure zone is causing piles of crap clouds, some laced with rain, to pour down from the north..). Nothing booked, but at this time of year that should not present a problem and if the weather is totally crap it means I can change my plans.

So, Austria, Italian Dolomites, Swiss Alps, French countryside, UK, in that order, before the end of the weekend. If anyone wants any pics they'll have to (1) wait - 35mm film isn't instant (2) teach me how to get images on the site (3) hope the weather makes me want to get the camera out!!

Take care. Weather should be OK in Alps, perhaps a bit colder but not heavy rain all the time. Just looking at the forecast.
I plan to leave for UK in mid-next week, also hope it will be dry ride. I will take my LT instead of GS anyway :)

Heading to Czech next week

Hi Thomas,

Have just been reading the post and note that you have a friend in Pisek who has accomodation. Would you be able to tell me the address as I may be passing through the area. It's the first country that we will be visiting in Eastern Europe that we do not know much about so it would be good to have some accomodation sorted out before we arrive.

One other thing. The Lonley Planet book on Czech Republic mentions that bikes are not allowed to go faster than 80kph. Is this true?

Maybe we can meet up for a drink if you are in the area next week.

Regards

Hi Garry,

sorry to reply with delay - I just returned (curiously) from UK :) I decided to travel on bike instead of flying (as always). I did that 1400km in one day and returned yesterday also in one day. It was about 14 hours including ferry and traffic jam around London and later around Brussels. I forgot to say, that it was not on GS, but on my touring bike - K1200LT :)

Regarding accomodation - my friend has hotel not in Pisek but between towns Pribram and Sedlcany. You can see hotel web site here.web site here It´s very good hotel actually. You may enjoy it if you will be at that area. But you can get accomodation almost everywhere, season is just starting, should be no problems.
Sure give me a call or send text on +420602349970 and perhaps we can meet somewhere and have lunch or dinner or so. It´s quite busy for me right now - leaving for garmish BMW meeting next thursday and following week riding at Alps. When you will come?
About 80km/h is it total bullshit. Forget it. Bike speed limit is exactly the same as for cars - 90 on roads, 130 on highways. Practically - as much as you can and as much as your wallet can allow. Is smart to not ride 150 in the towns, but you will have no problems riding fast in the countryside. Apart from highways are police speed traps mainly in the villages or towns, where is speed limit. I cannot remember any situation when would be radar in the plain countryide road or so. Actually - don´t drink and ride! We have ZERO % here!!!!

Thanks

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for getting back to me and hope we can meet up in Prague next week if you are not too busy.

I have been really impressed with the roads in Czech and so far havent seen a single pot hole. All the roads around Cesky Krumlov seem to be well maintained and nothing that will cause a GS any problems. The road from Cesky K to Prachtice is absolutley great. Race track smooth at times and nice and flowing.

I have been keeping to sensible speeds though I'm sure a GS will out pace a Police issue Skoda!

PS - Will Text you on Tuesday evening..

Hi Nick,

I will be (hopefully) diving at Mallorca at that time. Enjoy the stay and hope you will have nice weather and some fun here.

Tomas might see you in 2006! Fancy another trip to Czech for the MotoGP and going to Spain this year in August.

I used to teach a gymnazium in Brno, so I have some experience of riding in the CR.... :)

Sure. Just let me know in advance. I am in the UK quite often too. Been there on my LT while ago and it was good fun. Definitelly is better to have bike in the UK then car. No idea how you can drive in such horrible traffic all the time. :) M25 - crazy. :))
