Hi all

I am new to BMW, flat twins, and the GS, I bought a second hand 05 with 30k on it with full bmw history, now its just occurred to me that I have not riden it without earplugs, untill tonight.

Should I be concerned about the noises the bike is making, let me explain, up to 4k the engine sounds pretty smooth for a twin, then at 5k the noise turns to more of a bark, it almost sounds like main bearings have gone, if you rev the bike whilst still it is nowhere near as bad, is this normal or have i got a problem looming ???

please help a newbie.

you want to listen to a moto guzzi  [at any revs];)

Colin, I have an 06 GS, and spent a lot of time trying to get rid of the wind buffeting noise caused by the screen, now its quieter, but the downside of that is the big twin lump down there that sounds like its about to exploid..... but as you will be told "they all do that sir...".

Try listening to any big twin, Harley, triumph or as Ash points out a Guzzi, they all sound like they are distroying themselves. But most are pretty bullet proof, so don't worry.

all air cooled engines sound that way there is no water jacket to absorb the mechanical noise, just ride it you will know if there is something wrong:D

That,s great guys thanks, I was more worried that the sound changed distinctly between 4-5k on the revs.

Boxer engines seem to be noisey in general, try driving an old Subaru and it sounds like some one is having a war under the bonnet:eek:
