From what I`ve read....and heard from Harley owning mates...an 883 converted to a 1200 is a far better riding machine than a stock 1200 and there`s actually a cash saving after the mods have been done (allegedly).
The 883's converted to 1200s never seemed to go as well as the standard 1200. When I had my 1200 there were several other parts that were different as well. The later rubber mounted sportsters are really nice machines and are physically bigger than the solid mounted machines.
I really enjoyed mine and rode it as my only means of transport putting 16k on it in the first year. this was in 1989 so I may be looking back through rose tinted specs. It got off roaded, put down the drag strip and put in some serious long distance rides all without problems. The only issue I had was the paint peeling off the frame but this was covered under the warranty and my frame was powder coated. I got a best standing quarter of 13.2 in standard trim if thats any use.
