I was hoping to head off for my 6000 service at 7.00 this morning but my bike gives every indication of a flat battery.

I last rode it on Sunday for about 170 miles. I didn't take my GPS off, and left it connected through the week. The power lead "should" be linked to a supply that fades after about 15 seconds of ignition off (work done at the local dealership). I've noted this time frame to be variable in the past, but at worst only to leave power on for a minute.

I await the recovery guy - I have no facility to get myself sorted. Initially called BMW at 07.11. Heard nothing back. Chased at 07.50 and was told that I'd been called back (which didn't wind me up much!) Should have a visitor in the next few minutes......

This sounds like normal behaviour when using the 12 V socket as a source of power. It behaves the same when using the socket provided by BMW at the front of, and just under, the fuel tank (BMW do a lead for this socket for the Nav II).

Update

A chap with a battery-in-a-box turned up at about 8.25, Jumped the bike and tested that it was charging. All was fine.

Rode to Sawbridgeworths for the service and they did a full Optimate style overhaul of the battery whilst they got on with the rest.

They tested the power cable spliced into the ignition circuit for a leak, none. They tested similar with the GPS attached, nothing. They did find some errors in the on board computer, that they hadn't seen before, There were noted and cleared.

They recommended the use of Optimate or similar direct to the battery if the bike will stand for any length of time.

Borrowed an R1200 ST during the service. Which was an interesting opportunity. I've not been riding long and this is the most sporty riding position I've been in to date. Only did a little over 50 miles on it.

Glad you got it sorted Eddy........
See you tomorrow for the breakfast run.. :)
