Hello all.
I want renew my bike and I have big problem, what kind bike is better than my 1991 airhead?
-Oilhead? No! To heavy and poor suspension on forest.
-KTM 950 adventure? No! Suspension great, strong engine but too heavy.
- KTM 950 Super Enduro? Possible, not so heavy, great suspension and full of adrealine!
- BMW 650 Schalber??? I found in Finland that bike. Bike is genuine PIA-motors race bike, used in three races. Weight about 377 lbs dry. Suspension WP, 52 liter tank, stronger frame, "all inclued" touratech-set and condition is very good. Price is more than KTM adventure but lower than Super Enduro.
I drive about 7000 miles per year on winter, summer, tarmac roads and forest, sometimes on highways. So my friends, what are thinking, is Schalber ok on my daily use?

I had a Dakar which was fitted with the Schalber TT swingarm, WP shock and WP forks (slightly smaller diameter that the works rallye bikes, more like the WP's fitted to ktms) and the 18" rear wheel. The motor was bog stock, but the bike was excellent and great for everyday journeys and the odd tour.
The full Rallye bike is a bit more extreme, but I'd go for it, it won't lose money if you are buying it at the right price :thumb

Pia got a deal with Touratech for the 5 Rally Bikes TT prepared for it's own team, if it is one of those bikes, you should be aware that it does come with a lot more extras than the Rallye conversion you can buy from Touratech!

In this case it would have a custom carbon airbox, very special rims (Excel rims based on the wheel hub off of a carb F650), a matching very special swingarm, the engine would have roundabout 70 hp (modifications were done by PAMI) Öhlins shock in the rear (instead of a WP one) etc.

Those bikes really are VERY special on it's own, as I said, there are only 5 of those in existance, one is at the Touratech store in Kassel, germany, another one is a the TT headquarter, a friend of mine owns one, so that only leaves 2 of those bikes you could possibly buy.
Make sure if it is one of those bikes and if it is, pull the trigger on it and post pics :)

I fthis is the one OP was talking about, it's NOT one of those 5 Factory Rallys, but just the regular Rally bike. I dunno though, seeing that the Ad is from last year.

IMHO: Not worth 8900€, the "normal" 650 Rally's usually go for 3-4 k less than what he is asking.

Only has the 250mm Suspension (normal rear swing) Seat height is more like 90-92 cm

Danke Schön Gelber. Thats the bike I´m talking.
Have you see is f650 rallye bikes sales in Gernmany last months?

Ok, I call again to seller. He has buy on PIA-motors few year ago.
He said, engine is standard 650 injection. How Gelberhase said, swinging arm is normal 650.
Did you understand that partlist on your link? Is all that parts inclueds on normal touratech-rallye set or is the anything "special"?

Gelberhase, any web-links and information those bikes are important to me, and of course coments on that silver rallye BMW.

Thanks!

Well, it's very unlikely taht you will find the "Missing" TT Factory Rallye bike or even a bike with the 280mm suspension/Alloy swingarm.

There's been one F 650 Rally for sale like a month ago:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/251029965115?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Other than that, Andreas Hülsmann's travel-equipped F650 had been sold recently (the friend of mine who owns the Factory Rally bought it), it was equipped with pretty much everything, just that it still had the stock rear frame.

The part list is "just" the standard Rally Kit.
It's not like the normal Rally bikes aren't good by the way, they are still damn good bikes (I myself do have a Touratech Oryx Enduro, technically nearly the same as the rally bikes, weighs 364 lbs dry).

You should have in mind that you aren't gonna carry any luggage on these bikes, I myself dont dare to put more than 20 to 30 lbs on that rear frame, however the Oryx does not have the extra rear tank....this one itself is like 25 lbs if filled.

As for links, what kind of links are you looking for?
Something like this: http://www.vmar.com/touratech/f650/english/index.html

Thanks. I dont know are those luggage problem? I think its possible use soft sidebags, fitted over saddle?
Secon problem, there is no rear footbegs. In fackt, last six years I have need rear footbegs only two times but now my son is 7 years and i think sometimes he can joy small trips...

Anything else problems on daily/touring use?

What I like:
- Good groundclarance
- good suspension
- Big tanks and low fuel consuption.

Of course there is stuff what I never need, examble roadbook system.

The main problem for touring is the alloy rear frame, you can probably get more than 30 pounds on there, but I wouldnt go too far.

As for the rear footpegs: Same problem: the rear frame.
You will definetly not be able to ride 2 up with an adult. Believe me, I tried ;)

The frame is just too fragile.

If you only want a big tank and the WP Suspension:

This one belongs to the friend of mine I mentioned before, the one who owns the Rally bike and stuff.
I was actually planning on buying this very bike in march, but he wasnt ready to sell it by then, but now that he bought Andreas Hülsmann's old bike, he is ready to let this one go.

the only changes made to this bike are the side tanks (so you have 39 liters in total) and the Touratech Wp Suspension and Excel Rims.
So you would be able to ride 2up and take luggage with you :thumb

Thanks Gelber, all that your information was important to me. I don´t buy schalber. I found in Finland Xchallenge inclued large tank, touratech mask, Öhlins rear-shock and frontside tuned Marchozzi shiver components. Price is lower than schalber, bike is later and lower mileage than Schalber. And what I like, fuel economy is good!

I managed to "acquire" a Schalber swingarm from a good friend for my Dakar (now sold).

The swingarm is beautiful, but they stopped using them in the Dakar in favour of the standard steel, due to issues with the aluminium fatiguing. Not a problem for a bit of laning, but a big issue when doing 90mph+ over the desert.

The main benefit is being able to use an 18" rear wheel and still maintain full adjustment of the chain.

KTM WP forks up front make a massive difference to the handling of the standard Dakar especially when you use the factory WP rear shock :thumb2

I already had a nice talk about the Alloy swings with a TT employee.
They discovered that there is a certain suspension setting which can be used to prevent the alloy swings from breaking in the first place, that's why they still used/are still using them on their Factory bikes (Oryx extreme and Rally bikes).
They didnt find out about that until after the Dakar Rally though and still, they did not sell them anymore, even after they found out about that.

Random side note: (I didnt know about that before...maybe because I didnt ask anybody)
The Rally conversion Kits are using a steel rear frame, while the Oryx Kits use an Aluminium one.
I only found out because I had just bought one of those from a Rally 650.
