Is the bike a keeper?

Without wishing to state the obvious, is there anyone on here who hasn't had a new engine fitted :eek:

All 4 of my bikes have had silver engines - black looks horrible once it dulls or flakes - never had a new engine fitted, but my 2013 LC had the read drive replaced because of bubbling paintwork, it wasn't serious it BMW offered to replace it so would have been silly to refuse :).

None of my engines have corroded, protected with FS365 and ridden all year, washed every weekend without fail over the winter and if roads very salty then given a quick wash with the hose before putting away - simples.

Is the corrosion issues really a issue for a keeper? All bikes are going to corrode at some point. Say you have some corrosion issues on your 6 year old engine are you going to walk into motorrad and buy a new engine for it? Can bus systems have been used in cars for at least 15 years now and it hasn't been catastrophic. As someone else mentioned, good indy mechanics will become/ are already versed and tooled up to deal with the new technology and your not tied to the main dealer.

I also personally think that if your bike hasn't given you any major problems in its first 3 years it probably won't (other than wear and tear)

I keep a 'relatively' cheap 2010 Suzuki Bandit 1250 in my armoury. Just put new tyres, new battery, new chain and sprockets, new clutch fluid.

Cheap as chips to run and insure.

Last year I stripped it down myself and fitted new head bearings, new handlebars, heated grips, new mirrors, CREE LED lights, new Wilbers fork springs and seals plus Wilbers rear shock, engine bars, new rectifier, new spark plugs, air filter, engine coolant, oil and filter, brake pads front and rear with HELL braided hoses, fork brace, akrapovic carbon exhaust, pillion streetfighter cover, stomp grips, garmin sat nav, givi racks.....

Ahem.... did I say cheap as chips?

But great fun, totally enjoyed messing with it. ... and its quick for a naked bike.

hey that sounds like Trigger's broom. :D;)

2013 model brought new by me now with about 20k miles on it. No engine problems at all, commuted on it all year for two years and after a decent wash (which doesn't happen very often) it comes up looking like new every time.

Might be switching to a 1290 R once the rush subsides but only because I fancy a change. I've had 4 great years with mine and looked on at all the whining and skepticism on here with great amusement.

I'm really surprised to hear that. My 2017 feels much better than my 2015. The gearbox is superb compared to the older bike, the front end redesign has reduced the noise considerably, and my brakes are better (the rear on the old one was very spongy).

so am I after spending all that money on it

doesn't seem to be getting any better though and unless they do something a lot better for the "next model" GSA then I don't think I will buy a new one again

preferred my old twin cam

Well I have a long time yet until my contract is up, and in that time I'll keep an eye on the new engine and carry on enjoying the bike (when given the chance with a young family who seem to think I should be spending time with them instead of on my bike, the nerve!!!) :)

Good news though, went to my local BMW dealer today (Marshalls in Grimsby) and they told me they have a head BMW guy coming over to them on May 5th and I'm to take my bike in to let him look at it and also ride it

also got someone else going on the same day so if nothing else, BMW are taking all comments and complaints very serious and investigating all suspected problems etc

cant ask for more than that on a new 2017 gearbox "upgrade"
