OK, not a GS problem but ..........

Rock hard birdshit on car windscreen,

use soapy water and spomge to get the stuff off

grit on the sponge means I now have a small patch of little scratches

Is there any polishing compound that will help?

Cheers

Dick

you could try soaking and old towel in something like 'muk-off' and hot water and leaving it on said 'deposit'! for half an hour maybe - then hopefully just wipe away the loosened er, stuff!

Toothpaste.

Or I believe that Halfords do a windscreen restoring kit - friend claims to have used it to good effect.

Thanks a lot guys.

I did actually try toothpaste to no apparent effect. I'll check out the Halfords angle.

By the way, where can you buy jewellers rouge? We don't have jewellers these days. It's all watches and expensive bracelets now :D

Dick...when I was a lad I worked as a lab rat and we heated up iron oxide or some thing and it turned into a powder. I`m sure a trawl of the net would show you how to make it...and probably how to blow up some Federal buildings with it as well!!

C. Get down and dirty and make it like new....vide infra:-

1) Light Pressure.

2) Low RPM. 3M Super Duty cutting compound#, available from most stores selling automotive paint, is recommended.

To remove scratches:

1) Wash surface to remove any built up dirt or sand.

2) Squirt a little cutting compound on the wool pad, spread it on the surface area to be treated and with light sweeping motions polish the surface. Too strong a pressure or holding the buffer in one spot can burn and ruin the material. If doing a large area, periodically remove the cutting compound buildup from the pad with the ³spur² made for this purpose, available from the cutting compound supplier.

3) After cut-polishing, finish the job with 303 Aerospace Protectant. On a large area, do a 3¹x 3¹ area at a time. On the area to be polished, mist on a little 303. With the buffer and a fresh wool pad, with the buffer on low rpm spread the 303 and then turn up the rpm (never more than 1800) and polish it in until dry, constantly moving the buffer in a sweeping motion. Again, too much pressure or holding the buffer in one spot can burn & ruin the material. The benefits of finishing with 303 A. Protectant* are:

Smaller and hairline scratches disappear and a like-new clarity is restored.

Protects against UV caused oxidation.

The treated surface repels dirt, smudges, stains, hard water spots, snow, ice, etc. The plastic stays cleaner longer and cleans up easier.
