is there a way of tellin' the year of an Suzuki engine from the number stamped on it?

on of my friends has just bought a suzuki 600 which has had the engine replaced on it . can you tell the year of engine from the number stamped on it?

in his case 1723 1410** i've left the last two digits off


sorry for asking about a rice grinder but i need info:)
 
There is indeed - but, you need to talk to either an approved dealer or you could give Suzuki down in Crawley a ring. They're a good bunch and should be able to help.
